DCS is a highly complex organisation employing c.1000 personnel which includes Teachers, MOD Broader Banded Civil Servants, Soulbury Grades, Locally Employed Civilians and Contractors in multiple worldwide locations.

Job description

King Richard School is seeking to appoint an outstanding and reflective teacher of Computing and STEM to join their school, who has recent UK experience of teaching in their subject specialist area from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of developing excellent relationships with staff and students and of planning and delivering an engaging curriculum to ensure that students make outstanding progress. The start date for this post is January 2022 or sooner if possible.

King Richard School is located in Dhekelia, in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area of Cyprus. Located overlooking the Mediterranean, the school serves predominantly children of MOD personnel and also members of the local community. The school has around 150 pupils on roll and consistently achieves results at Key Stage 4 that put King Richard School in the top 3% of schools nationally. That is only part of the reason why the school has achieved an Outstanding grading at our last two OFSTED inspections. Community is a major part of our school vision and this offers a depth to our context that is extremely rewarding.

• To work effectively with the Assistant Headteacher (Pupil Support) as a form tutor or mentor.

Competencies:

  • Setting high expectations and ensuring good progress and outcomes for all the pupils taught or mentored.
  • Proven delivery of outstanding classroom practice
  • Proven experience, knowledge and understanding of making accurate assessments that inform planning and enable pupils to improve and ability to lead KS3-5 moderation. Must be able to teach computing and STEM subjects.
  • Proven experience to successfully lead initiatives (relating to computing and STEM) demonstrating positive impact on progress and attainment
  • Effective behaviour management that ensures a good and safe learning environment across the school.
  • Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school.

For the purpose of day to day line management the post holder is responsible to the Head of Faculty and SLT.

Set an example in providing a safe and stimulating environment for pupils of all abilities, needs and ages, rooted in and encouraging mutual respect that significantly develops learning.

Set differentiated goals and targets based on an in depth knowledge of individual and groups of pupils that enthuse, motivate and challenge all pupil.

Effectively promote and demonstrate the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of pupils.

Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils:

Be accountable for continuously high levels of pupils’ attainment, progress and outcomes.

Demonstrate a clear knowledge of pupils’ individual capabilities within differentiated SOW’s and lesson plans to develop independent learning.

Create opportunities for pupils to reflect on the progress they have made and enable them to set individual targets to significantly develop their performance

Demonstrate an excellent knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn and how this impacts on teaching, implementing this in classroom teaching and sharing this with other staff.

Inspire pupils to take a mature and conscientious attitude to their own work and study, enabling them to help develop the learning of others.

Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge:

Have an up to date and excellent/extensive knowledge of the relevant subject(s) and curriculum areas, including the different types of qualifications and specifications and their suitability for meeting learners’ needs.

Contribute to the professional development of colleagues by sharing critical /and extensive understanding of developments in the subject and curriculum areas, and promote the value of scholarship.

Promote collaboration and develop high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English, in specialist subject and cross curricular activities.

Learning - Plan and teach well-structured lessons:

Embed knowledge and develop high levels of understanding through clear and effective objectives and lesson time.

Promote and encourage a love of learning and stimulate and develop children’s intellectual curiosity. Enable other staff to do the same.

Continually set challenging and differentiated homework and extension work. Plan other out-of-class activities to consolidate and extend the knowledge and understanding pupils have acquired.

Reflect systematically on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching, developing own and other’s teaching practice to improve the learning of pupils.

Support and enable others to provide an engaging curriculum within the relevant subject area(s).

Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils:

Know when and how to differentiate appropriately, using approaches which enable pupils to be taught effectively.

Have a secure understanding of how a range of factors can inhibit pupils’ ability to learn, and how best to overcome these.

Demonstrate an awareness of the physical, social and intellectual development of children, and how to adapt teaching to support pupils’ education at different stages of development.

Have a clear understanding of the needs of all pupils, including those with special education needs; those of high ability; those with English as an additional language; those with disabilities; and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them.

Make accurate and productive use of assessment:

Use effective assessment processes within the relevant subject and curriculum areas, including statutory assessment requirements to develop learning.

Make effective use of formative and summative assessment to ensure high levels of pupils’ progress.

Effectively use relevant data to develop progress, set targets, and plan subsequent differentiated lessons for the promotion of high levels of learning.

Give individual pupils regular, positive and effective feedback, both orally and through a range of marking strategies, and enabling pupils to respond to the feedback.

Leadership - Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment:

Model effective routines for behaviour in classrooms that promote learning and take responsibility for promoting good and courteous behaviour both in classrooms and around the school, in accordance with the school’s behaviour policy.

Model high expectations of behaviour and implement a framework for discipline with a range of strategies, using praise, sanctions and rewards consistently and fairly.

Manage all classes effectively, using a range of approaches which are appropriate to pupils’ needs in order to involve and motivate them and improve standards of achievement.

Model excellent relationships with pupils, exercise appropriate authority, and act decisively when necessary.

Fulfil wider professional responsibilities:

Make a positive and effective contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school, encouraging others to do the same.

Model effective professional relationships with colleagues, knowing how and when to draw on and give advice and specialist support.

About King Richard School

King Richard School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form in Dhekelia, Cyprus, serving students from the age of 11-18. The secondary school predominantly serves the military community in British Forces Cyprus. As a Ministry of Defence School, it is part of the Department for Children and Young People. 

King Richard School opened in 1958. It became federated with St John’s School, Episkopi, in 2009. The school follows the British Curriculum, with students having the option to study BTEC courses along with GCSEs and A levels. The school overlooks the Mediterranean sea, with facilities including iPads, use of a swimming pool and gym, sports courts, running tracks and modern design, technology, music and art blocks, complete with 3D printers and iMac computers.
