The Computer Science Department at Salesian

Due to the expansion of the current curriculum and the departure of our long-standing Head of Department, we are looking to appoint two new members to our successful team.

The department is currently made up of four teachers and a specialist HLTA. We have five IT suites across the school and college sites. The latest version of MS Office and the complete Adobe CC form the basis of our mainstream software along with additional specialised applications. All software and hardware is maintained by our excellent IT support team.

In Key stage 3 students study IT and Computing and attend two lessons per fortnight throughout the year. The curriculum is designed to enable students to transfer into either ICT or Computer Science courses at Key Stage 4. We focus on use of the internet and mainstream software packages as well computer basics, coding and the creative use of ICT.

At Key Stage 4 we offer the OCR Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia and OCR Computer Science. We usually have two classes opting for each subject in each year group and have enjoyed some excellent results in recent years.

At key Stage 5 we offer OCR Cambridge Technicals and OCR A Level Computer Science and are due to launch the new T Level in Digital Production Design and Development next year. T Levels are new courses designed to offer an attractive alternative to A Levels and apprenticeships. T Levels will combine classroom theory, practical learning, and an industry placement with an employer to make sure students have a real experience of the workplace.

someone with the skills and experience to teach Computing both at KS4 and KS5.

We offer a lunchtime Computer Club four days a week where students have the opportunity to use the IT suite for their own needs.

We achieve good results.  At Key Stage 4 in 2019 89% of students achieved an A* to C grade in the GCSE and 84% A* to C in the Cambridge Nationals.  We are certainly not complacent, there is still a lot to do and we are excited about appointing the right person to move the department onto new challenges.

We are determined to make the IT and Computing Department at Salesian the best in Surrey, if not the country!  We look forward to meeting you and discussing your ideas to help us in achieving this end. Please do visit us and come and look around.

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
