Job overview

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring Teacher of Computing to join our exciting department from January 2020 or sooner.

The computing department is a small, close knit department who share a passion for delivering Computing. Lessons take place in dedicated computer suites which are well resourced with desktop PCs, air conditioning and interactive white-boards. A variety of websites and resources are used within the department including Python, Scratch and BBC Micro:bits. Google Drive is used to share resources within the department and Google Classroom is used for managing classwork and homework alike.

As a team we are passionate about computing and are always looking at ways we can improve our curriculum and teach computing principles in new and engaging ways. Collaboration and teamwork are very important in building a successful curriculum and we believe that increasing students’ enjoyment and curiosity of the subject will enhance attainment and progress.

Over the last two years we have taken steps to adapt our schemes of work and resources to meet the requirements of the Computing National Curriculum with our aim to turn our students into well rounded problem solvers. This is an ongoing project and we work closely as a department to regularly review the units that we teach and share new resources with each other.

In year seven, students study Computing for one hour a week and will study topics such as Scratch, Micro:bits and binary. In year eight, students study Computing three times a fortnight and will study topics such as Python, sorting and searching and computer hardware.

Computer Science GCSE (OCR) is currently an option and students can select this at the end of year eight. Having three years at GCSE allows students to study programming in more depth during year nine and this also gives time for students to be inquisitive and enjoy the subject. We continue to adapt our schemes of work and assessments to ensure students are well prepared for the rigour of the GCSE exams.

Increasing the profile of the subject has been a recent priority and we have made efforts to expand our extra-curricular offerings. This has involved running a coding club and entering competitions such as the recent ChorleyHack competition, where Parklands came first place within their group.

We are a dynamic and forward thinking department and feel collaboration and team work are the key to ensuring good progress.

We believe our school is a magnificent place to teach and help develop the next generation. Our school is a lovely, warm and effervescent community; our students are an absolute delight, and we receive constant praise from members of the community and visitors to our school about their mindfulness, manners, generosity and mature approach to their experiences in school.

We are not an exams-factory; although our students achieve extremely well, we believe that a holistic education is paramount, and we encourage like-minded teachers to join us and contribute to our ongoing success. In return, teachers at Parklands can expect to teach due to outstanding student behaviour. Teachers enjoy a calm, purposeful and orderly school community where mutual respect is the norm. New staff to Parklands join a vibrant workforce, where there is lots going on, from school musicals and drama productions, to a multitude of sporting activities and social activities organised by staff for staff.

We are proud of our exceptional facilities.  We have a fantastic all-weather pitch, a magnificent TV studio, a state-of-the-art music recording studio, brand-new cooking facilities for students of Food Technology, a large dance studio, brand-new science laboratories, a brand-new Modern Languages suite and a new dining area. For our students, our school is a wonderful place to learn, and for our staff it’s a wonderful place to make a difference!

Values and vision

As an outward-facing school in continual pursuit of excellence, we aim to provide a world-class, 21st Century education for all pupils, irrespective of social background, race, gender, disability, belief, and sexual orientation, so they can successfully embark on the next stage of their education, training or employment, and make a positive contribution to society.

Ofsted (November 2014)

“Attainment in five or more good GCSEs, including English and mathematics, is significantly above the national average. Progress in English has been consistently good over recent years. In mathematics, progress has improved and is now consistently good for students in all year groups. The progress of all groups of students, including those who are disadvantaged, is good. The proportion of students making better than expected progress in English and mathematics is in line with what is seen nationally. This demonstrates strong improvements in mathematics.”
