Job overview

Would you like to work with able students who enjoy computing? Would you like to join a supportive team of specialists who collaborate to get the best from our students? Would you like the freedom to innovate in your classroom?  Perhaps you would like the opportunity to teach in the sixth form or perhaps that is something you would like to work towards?

We seek to appoint a teacher of Computing from September 2023 to join a successful department in an ‘outstanding’ selective school.  The post can be full or part time to suit your work-life balance and we welcome applications from both experienced teachers and ECTs. The successful candidate will need experience of coding but you will have options within an experienced department to teach at a level that suits your level of expertise.

This is a rare chance to join a small department, teaching enthusiastic and intelligent young coders in a friendly environment that encourages professional development and individual wellbeing. The department has 3 computer suites at its disposal, offers extracurricular clubs and contributes to STEM activities in the school.  Computer Science is a popular subject taught at all Key Stages, with strong recruitment at Key Stages 4 and 5. Results are excellent at both GCSE and KS5 with strong value-added; students regularly gain places at prestigious universities to pursue Computer Science.

Bexley Grammar School is an oversubscribed, high achieving, coeducational selective school, rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in October 2022. With a full complement of subject specialist teachers, a rich curriculum and a wealth of extra-curricular activities, we provide an exciting and enriching educational experience for all and many opportunities for career progression in both the academic and pastoral life of the school.

For more information about our school and a sense of its ethos, please explore our website (www.bexleygs.co.uk) where you will also find an application form under Vacancies.

Closing date for applications is noon on Tuesday 28th February.

Bexley Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.   As such, all posts are subject to a safer recruitment process, including the disclosure of criminal records and vetting checks, including online and public social media searches.

This post is considered to be a customer-facing position; as such it falls within scope of the Code of Practice on English language requirement for public sector workers.  The school therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the person specification. These will be applied during the recruitment/selection and probationary stages.

About Bexley Grammar School

Everyone who visits BGS notices the warmth of the relationships between students and staff in a vibrant community.

Bexley Grammar School is an oversubscribed, high achieving, coeducational selective school, rated as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in October 2022. We stretch our students with a challenging curriculum including two foreign languages and all three separate sciences at GCSE. We raise aspirations, grow confidence and develop young people into compassionate leaders. Our school motto translates as “to strive for excellence”.

About 50% of our students are non White British and over 20% have a first language other than English as their mother tongue. Although our pupil premium numbers are low compared to national averages they are high compared to other grammar schools and our school deprivation indicator puts us above the 40th percentile for all schools nationally.

We all learn best when we are happy, safe, busy, inspired and valued as individuals; every student is encouraged to choose from a startling array of extra-curricular activities, many of them rooted in our vibrant and competitive house system. These activities help students develop as individuals and as members of teams; they also provide numerous opportunities for leadership.  We participate in World Challenge, Young Enterprise, the Jack Petchey Award and numerous other initiatives; our Language Leaders and Sports Leaders work with primary school children; there are clubs for everything from cheerleading to chess or from STEM club to Archery and if something is missing, students are encouraged and supported to start it.

There is a full programme of sports fixtures, concerts and plays during the year, an art exhibition and the annual musical production of near West End quality. A typical academic year clocks up about seventy day visits run by all subject areas in addition to a wide range of residential trips both in the UK and all over the world - typically 20 overseas trips in a given academic year.

Most students continue into our thriving Sixth Form, which plays a key role in leading the rest of the student body.  All students follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the Sixth Form. The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a full and well-balanced course which develops independence and depth of learning while nurturing the personal qualities needed for success at university and in a career. Our IB students gain places at top universities, including the highest rate of Oxford and Cambridge entry of any school in the London Borough of Bexley.
