Job overview

We are seeking a well-qualified, engaging and dynamic teacher to join our successful Computing department. We have been at the forefront of the drive to include more Computing concepts in the curriculum at all key stages and have been designated as a Lead School in the Network of Excellence for the teaching of Computer Science. We are looking for an outstanding classroom practitioner who is creative and well-organised with a passion for Computing and the ability to teach programming in both visual and textual environments.

Computing at Sir John Lawes is taught at all key stages including A Level and the successful candidate will be required to teach across the full age and ability range. All teaching is undertaken in dedicated computer suites and every faculty member is issued with an iPad and a laptop to support their teaching and learning activities.

We offer a stimulating environment with a supportive induction and professional development programme, recognising that our teachers are the reason for our continuing success. Our status as a Teaching School means we are able to offer staff the highest quality support. July induction is offered to NQTs.

Sir John Lawes is a high performing, consistently over-subscribed, community comprehensive of 1169 11-18 year old students situated in the Harpenden, just north of London, a relatively prosperous dormitory town for London commuters, which falls within the 'fringe'. We have grown dramatically in the past few years and are still growing, particularly in the 6th form, largely because of the very significant popularity and success of the school.

Sir John Lawes has recently been awarded a specialism in Science and is a Specialist School in Community and Media Arts. We have also received an Achievement Award every year for the last few years. We are the only local school to have been awarded a second specialism, and with our Training School status this will make us one of the few schools in the country with three recognitions of this kind. Our most recent full Ofsted Inspection (February 08) graded us “Outstanding” across all areas. In 2006 we were inspected in the area of Education for Sustainable Development and our practice was rated outstanding.

We have established a reputation for innovation, very high standards of teaching and learning, excellent relationships in a warm atmosphere and high levels of student and staff motivation.

At Sir John Lawes we have recognised that it is essential to support staff by providing appropriate training. We have regular INSET sessions for staff and the DfES recently identified us as a centre of excellence for developing teachers.
