Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Computing with Mathematics. The start date for this role is anticipated to be September 2020.

THE DEPARTMENT 

The ICT and Computing department consists of the Director of ICT, Director of Digital Learning and Head of Computer Science. The subject is taught throughout all year groups , covering a range of computing theory including programming, computational thinking, data representation, networking and web design and generally ranging in class size of between 5 and 24. Python is taught as a primary programming language but candidates from a wide range of programming backgrounds are encouraged. 

Next academic year there will be 42 and 40 pupils taking the subject at GCSE (Year 10 and 11 respectively), and 35 at A-Level and this role is being advertised due to the success of the department in increasing numbers taking both public examination courses. At present we follow the Cambridge syllabus for GCSE and the OCR syllabus at A-Level. The results in recent years have been excellent, achieving 97% A*-A at IGCSE and 83 A*-A at A-Level. Every year Brighton College leavers secure offers and the grades to attend top Universities to study Computer Science (and related disciplines). 

The ICT and Computing Department runs various clubs and societies including a Programming Competitions Club, a robotics club, and a computer games development club.  We are particularly interested in a candidate who is willing to take a lead with the robots team, who last year were ranked 28th out of 55 teams in the First Robotics Competition in Istanbul.

ROLE SPECIFICATION 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Computing across the curriculum, from Year 7 to A-level, and will need to possess strong programming skills as well as the ability to code across a range of programming paradigms. An ability to contribute towards the department’s extension programme, including a willingness to support pupils with applications to leading universities (including Oxford and Cambridge), will be a distinct advantage. All teachers within the Department are expected to assist in the development of Schemes of Work, through the creation of teaching resources and the compilation of content for our virtual learning environment. 

Although the appointee will be based primarily in the Computing department, it is unlikely that there will be enough periods available for a full timetable in this subject in the first instance. As a result, the successful candidate should be able to offer at least a third of a timetable of another subject. This would ideally be mathematics, but other subject combinations would be considered for the right person.

All teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 14 houses (of which six are boarding houses and eight are day). There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the co-curricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of almost 100 school societies. 

Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
