Job overview

We are seeking to appoint, from 1st September 2024, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic part-time Teacher of Design and Technology (0.4 FTE, 2 days) to join an outward-looking and high achieving Creative and Performing Arts Faculty. The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher, passionate about their subject, and must be willing to contribute to the wider life of the school.

The Faculty

The Creative and Performing Arts Faculty at Bury Grammar School is a thriving team of twelve members of staff. We are committed to enabling our pupils to benefit from the very best standards of teaching and are proud of our departmental culture of collaboration. The departments in the faculty are Art and Design, Drama, Music, Design and Technology and Food. We provide a wide range of opportunities within the faculty to encourage our pupils to maximise their potential and thus promoting a sense of challenge, curiosity and risk-taking in an inspirational and supportive environment. The Faculty has a strong enrichment programme and contributes an enormous and valuable amount to the wider life of the school with pupils across the schools spending much of their extra-curricular time within these departments. We organise many educational visits to art galleries, the theatre and music recitals, as well as pupils taking part in external competitions. We host an annual Art Exhibition and the School Production is one of the highlights of the school year attracting sellout performances.

The Art Department

The Art Department has an excellent set of facilities that includes a specialist ceramic studio, two print presses, an exposure unit as well as ICT equipment and DSLR cameras all set in beautiful open, light and spacious studios across both sites. Pupils are inspired and challenged during their lessons, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Pupils are taught to think creatively and critically by investigating and evaluating a wide range of creative outcomes.

The Design and Technology Department

The Design and Technology Department has an excellent set of facilities that includes a vast range of machinery, tools, resistant materials and digital resources.  The successful candidate must be competent at using all DT machinery and should be willing to undergo refresher and training courses when/if required.  There is also a skilled Technician, shared with the Art Department, who is available to provide hands-on support when requested and booked in advanced.  Housed within the workshop there is a bank of computers which provide programs such as 2D Design and Adobe Suite.  The successful candidate should be capable of using all design packages to aid teaching and learning and should be adapted into their schemes of work.  We are looking to appoint an energetic member of staff who can plan and deliver contemporary and exciting new Design Technology projects and provide new, cutting-edge opportunities for our pupils.  The new DT Teacher will be a part of a very busy department and will be expected to run extra-curricular activities to enhance and promote the subject across BGS.  A keen thirst for competitions would be desirable to lead our pupils throughout local and national competitions within the engineering and technology disciplines.

The School has a long and rich history of excellence extending back 450 years and our staff, pupils and alumni are proud of the School’s long-standing traditions. It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Through our unique blend of single-sex education from ages 7-16 and co-education in our Pre-School, Infant School and Sixth Form, we offer the ‘best of both worlds’ for our pupils at every stage of their educational journey. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

One of our key strategic objectives is to maintain, recruit, nurture and develop first class teaching and support staff.
