Job overview

City of London School is introducing an exciting new course in Design, Computing and Robotics from September 2021. This course aims to fulfil the need for specification that will combine teaching of the design principles from the traditional Design and Technology courses but combine them with contemporary technologies and use of 3D computer modelling and testing. It will be a primarily a creative subject, although one where pupils will use their creativity to solve real world problems. Taking pupils through all the elements of the design cycle, this course will introduce them to methodology of work in the design studios and the software packages and hardware elements used. Developed In consultation with leading designers and robotics course developers, the course will emphasise collaborative work and develop leadership and project management skills alongside specific design knowledge. Pupils will be introduced to Rhino 3D modelling platform, Grasshopper programming application and Python. As an optional course in Year 9, uptake for September 2021 has been extremely high, indicating for the potential for growth in the future years. We aim to utilise the Higher Project Qualification route for certificating the work in Years 10 and 11, so that we give our pupils maximum flexibility in terms of projects they can be working on.

To coincide with the launch of this new course, we are looking to appoint an outstanding teacher of Design & Computing for September 2021. Both the IT&C and Art & Design Departments are very successful and are at an exciting stage in modifying their curricula. Computing & IT is vibrant, successful and popular at CLS; Old Grammar to Second Form (Years 6-8) have a bespoke IT&C course, constantly adapting to respond to the primary curriculum and the changing emphasis in coding. We also offer an exciting programme of Art & Design to the Lower Years, allowing us to offer Fine Art and Art & Design as a choice at GCSE. Compulsory Fourth Form IT&C is a tailored course offering Office skills, Web safety and Programming. The Junior Sixth can opt for a bespoke Informatics Course or do an EPQ with a Cyber Security focus. Art A Level is offered with a strong emphasis on pupil decision and enormous flexibility in the media utilised across the course. There is a rich supra-curricular programme as well, which is overseen by the two Heads of Department, including competitions and Olympiads. Large numbers of pupils go on to high-tariff universities to read Computer Science and other associated courses such as Engineering and Mathematics. We have a strong track record with the various competitive entry Art Schools for both their Foundation Programmes, and other BA courses.

The post will involve teaching Years 6 – 12. The post would be suitable for an NQT (we provide statutory induction) or a colleague with more experience. Knowledge of the design cycle and familiarity with some design and 3D modelling software is crucial, as is the willingness to develop new ideas. This post is ideal for a someone who would like to be involved in developing a new and exciting specification, a true lifelong learner who is willing to keep developing their own design and/ or computing skills as needed, whilst still teaching essential IT&C skills to our younger years.

The School has a long-standing record of high academic achievement (92.5% of A Level and Pre-U entries gained A* to B/D1-M1 grades in 2019). There is also much happening in terms of extra-curricular activities, and all staff are expected to be fully involved in School life.

CLS was named by the Sunday Times as London Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020, and occupies fine, modern buildings near St. Paul’s Cathedral overlooking the Thames, opposite the Tate Modern. There are impressive off-site sports facilities in south east London.
