Job overview

Balshaw’s has been a specialist STEM school for well over a decade and the Technology Faculty has been an area of excellence in the school throughout that time. All students study a D&T subject at KS4 of either Food Preparation and Nutrition or Design and Technology with a specialism in Graphics, Resistant Materials or Textiles.

Every D&T subject has above average progress in the school’s FFT Aspire report, outperforming other schools nationally. Therefore this is a fantastic opportunity for the successful applicant to work in one of the strongest D&T departments in the county.

This post has arisen due to the retirement of the current post holder. The main subject required is

Design and Technology Resistant Materials to GCSE with the ability to offer another specialism at GCSE, our technology staff teach other technology subjects at KS3 besides their specialism. Please indicate on your application which specialisms you are able to offer.

This post will be from September 2021. Ideally we would like the successful candidate to have experience but equally an outstanding NQT would be considered for the Teacher of Design and Technology.

Professional Development:

Staff at Balshaw’s have an hour per week of dedicated Professional Development time which takes place on a Monday evening. Balshaw’s is also a member of a number of local Teaching Alliance networks and staff both deliver training and are able to take part in training across these networks.

All staff are provided with laptop computers, have a dedicated staffroom, staff silent working room, CPD library, Staff Health and Wellbeing Resource Library and various kitchen areas and departmental offices. Staff also benefit from the use of a fully-equipped fitness suite.

The closing date is 9am on Friday 19th March, 2021.

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.

Values and Vision

Richard Balshaw wanted the school to be a supportive and inclusive place that benefited the whole child, and his view remains important today. The school has high expectations of pupils and aims for excellence, at the same time as upholding its Christian faith and creating healthy working relationships with parents and local churches, businesses, industries and the community. Balshaw's motto “Non sibi sed aliis”, which translates as “not for ourselves but for others”, reflects the selfless and tolerant nature of the school .

Ofsted

“Under the exceptional leadership of the headteacher, students and staff flourish at Balshaw’s. Governors and all leaders and managers waste no time in tackling the slightest weakness so students’ achievement is outstanding. Students behave extremely well. They say how very safe they feel and are particularly appreciative of the exceptional personal support which the school gives them.”
