Job overview

Full Time, Permanent Contract

Salary Scale MPR/UPS

Start Date: 1st January 2023

We are seeking to appoint a colleague who shares our ambition to ensure that every young person at Samuel King’s School achieves their personal best. You will join a team of experienced and committed teachers, who work in a very collaborative and supportive way. Our children are delightful, and our community are very supportive of the school and our staff. Working in our unique federation will also give you excellent opportunities to work in a cross-phase setting, expanding your skills by working with children across all age ranges.

We are a small, community based, school with a long tradition of serving local children and their families. We aim to be caring and inclusive, while still providing an excellent academic grounding for all our children. We highly value being small, being able to get to know each child and their family very well, and being at the heart of this vibrant community.

We are also very proud of our academic record. Children at SKS achieve conspicuously well. However, we are also focused on developing the whole child, and pay as much attention to social skills and personal development as we do to academic excellence.

The school was last inspected by Ofsted in July 2022 and we are awaiting the final report, however the inspector described us as “flying forward”. We now believe we have the capacity to be judged “Outstanding” at our next inspection. We are looking to recruit a person who are able to deliver superb teaching and learning and an excellent experience for our children.

It is a Federation policy to offer pay portability to colleagues on UPS elsewhere.

Application pack is available on the school website.

The closing date for applications is Monday 10th October 2022 (midday).

Interviews are planned to take place shortly after that.

Electronic applications are fully acceptable and these should be emailed to head@alston.cumbria.sch.uk marked for the attention of Mrs Pamela Seaton, our business manager.  Candidates called for interview will be contacted by phone in the first instance with detailed information following by email.

I hope you will consider joining our team and I look forward to receiving your application.

At Samuel King’s School we take safeguarding very seriously and consequently the successful candidate will be required to complete a DBS enhanced check. Please do not include CVs with your application as these will be disregarded for safeguarding purposes.

Values and Vision

The small size of the school is one of the things making it unique, a factor which the school describes as “a real alternative to the ever growing factory-like secondary schools that have mushroomed in recent years”. It is a safe and encouraging school that provides its students with a varied and valuable education.

Despite having no sixth form college, it has links with sixth form colleges in the area to help students have a smooth transition into further education.

Ofsted

“The very large majority of parents are pleased with the quality of education the school provides. They rightly value the good personal support given to students and recognised that students feel safe at school. Students are given good advice and support, which enables them to make well informed choices about the next stage of their education, training and employment. Students make good progress in French, dance and drama.”
