Job overview

Newhouse Academy – part of Hollingworth Learning Trust – has an exciting opportunity for a Teacher of Design Technology/Engineering to join our academy from the Autumn term 2024.

We are looking for a great practitioner who:

  • Holds qualified teacher status; specialising in Design Technology/Engineering;
  • Has a real desire to help students achieve all that they can;
  • Has values in line with the academy’s priorities of Aspiration, Integrity and Respect.

Newhouse Academy is a comprehensive secondary school, situated close to the M60 in the town of Heywood. We work closely with our partner school, Hollingworth Academy, and are on a school improvement journey to deliver rising academic standards. The emphasis for the academy is the ‘Our People’ high expectations agenda, where we have concentrated on doing the right thing for our people, through a carefully constructed personal development curriculum.

We have been chosen as one of 50 schools nationally to gain government funding for building development, which will see a brand new build for our Technology and Science departments, and is well underway, set to open later in the year. The building will house five specialist technology rooms designed specifically to suit the subjects and curriculum we teach with state of the art machinery.

We are delighted by our recent Ofsted report, which graded the academy as ‘Good’ for Leadership & management, Personal development and Behaviour & attitudes. This fantastic achievement followed GCSE results from summer 2023 that led to Newhouse Academy being placed ‘top of similar schools nationally’, by the Fischer Family Trust, based on Progress 8.

As part of our drive to increase wellbeing, teaching staff receive a higher than 10% non teaching time on their timetable. There is dedicated CPD time each week, staff are then given time to work on implementing this into their lessons. We have two staff leading well being, running initiatives such as the Wellbeing café, staff breakfasts and earlier finish times.

Our design faculty is looking to recruit a talented and enthusiastic teacher of Design & Technology or engineering to deliver Technology to KS3 & KS4. The range of subjects delivered at KS4 continues to be very popular with our students and we deliver the following options: Engineering, Construction, Design & Technology & Food & Nutrition. We have links with local companies who provide industry visits to help students develop their industry experience. Recently construction have had several lessons on an active construction site, laying bricks and a visit to a steel work fabricators. The DT department are leading several cross curricular STEM projects which demonstrate the importance of the subject and we are supported by SLT to develop and expand our department into brand new state of the art faculties.

Within the Technology department, we offer:

Design Technology and AQA 8552

WJEC Construction

WJEC Engineering

Food & nutrition AQA 8552.

If you have a strong character, energy, credibility and the ability to inspire; if you can motivate and challenge others; we’d love you to join us in taking this journey.

With academy values of Aspiration, Integrity and Respect, we are embedding an ‘Our People’ culture through everything we do and our high expectations of both students and staff are bearing fruit.

We believe in providing a high quality education for students and are committed to the continuous professional development of staff.

In return, we offer:

  • Membership of the Teachers’ Pension scheme
  • Funded CPD for nationally recognised qualifications
  • An optional package of health benefits from Medicash
  • Free use of gym facilities
  • Staff activities, including a Wellbeing Café, running/cycling/walking group
  • Ample car parking

We actively welcome visits and would be delighted to show you around our Academy, so you can fully appreciate our learning environment and meet our team. If you would like to arrange a visit, please email Rebekah Duffy on recruitment@newhouseacademy.co.uk.
