Job overview

Trinity Academy Sowerby Bridge

Teacher of EAL

Start date: To be agreed

Salary: MPR/UPR (plus a TLR 2D £3826 for the right candidate)

Trinity Academy Sowerby Bridge is an ambitious and inclusive 11-16 school that has 800 pupils on roll and is over-subscribed in years 7, 8 and 9.  Following a period of support from Trinity MAT, the school formally joined the Trust in 2018.  There has since been significant improvement in outcomes, meaning the academy can now be recognised as one of the most improved schools in the country.  Aspirations and ambitions are high; however, the school is determined not to rest on its laurels and is continually striving for ways to better serve the students.  It is now seeking to appoint a strong Teacher of EAL to join an ambitious and ever-thriving EAL team, dedicated to supporting the 46% of students, who qualify as EAL.

The school is committed to providing a fitting and ambitious curriculum suitable for all its students and has already invested significantly in establishing and developing a committed and hardworking EAL team, who remain guided by the core values of: Empathy, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a committed individual, with a passion for supporting vulnerable students in their quest to improve the English proficiency of our students.

As we have an ever-changing picture of our EAL students’ needs, we cater for those with the weakest levels of English within an alternative provision and seek to support teachers within mainstream lessons where EAL students with adequate proficiency in English, are situated.  Following 12 months of rapid progress in this area, we are looking to expand our team, and appoint a Teacher of EAL to lead the alternative provision base and support with EAL students within the wider school.

Currently, the EAL team comprises of the staff below:

  • A senior leader dedicated to the oversight of all EAL students at TASB.
  • An Academy Lead for EAL who strategically oversees the curriculum and pastoral support provided to all EAL students at TASB.
  • An EAL Co-ordinator who teaches students with low proficiency in EAL, currently being educated within our alternative provision.
  • An EAL engagement officer to support predominantly with the pastoral care of our Czech/Slovak students.

If you are a teacher within a Primary or Secondary School setting, with the vision to drive the strategic direction and development of our EAL provision, this role offers an outstanding opportunity to play a key role in the further development of Trinity Academy Sowerby Bridge.  You must be fully committed to optimising the opportunities that are available to our most vulnerable children and young people, secure in the knowledge that you will be joining an ambitious forward-thinking Academy Trust.  The successful candidate must be passionate about improving our EAL students’ life chances and supporting them throughout their journey at TASB.  You must have a strong work ethic and high expectations of yourself and others, with the ability to lead staff and students in realising those expectations.

To find out more about this exceptional opportunity, the benefits of working for the trust and how to apply, visit our recruitment website: www.trinitymat.org/all-vacancies .  Here you can also view our Staff Prospectus.

Closing date: 8am, Monday 10th May 2021

Interviews: To be confirmed

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people/vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check

The Trinity MAT were first approached to work with the then Sowerby Bridge High School, when it had been graded as inadequate by Ofsted and had been ranked in the bottom 15% of all schools nationally.

After joining the MAT in 2018 the progress made has been outstanding. The academy has improved its Progress 8 outcome by 0.92 and the performance puts us comfortably in the top 1% of most improved schools in the country.

In September 2021 we will be adopting the new name of Trinity Academy Grammar to better communicate our identity, high standards and aspirations for our students. We have chosen a name which truly reflects our grammar school heritage, and to better showcase our core values of Empathy, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility, as we continue to build on this legacy through our outstanding achievements and passion to help our students reach their full potential.

It is a very exciting time to be considering joining Trinity Academy Grammar.  We can offer candidates the opportunity to work in partnership with the Principal and the senior leadership team, teachers in the school and other professionals across the trust (including the Teaching School and West Yorkshire Maths Hub).

The working environment is supported by committed, hardworking and supportive colleagues who are focused on improving outcomes for our students. Comprehensive pastoral systems are embedded to ensure the behaviour of students is outstanding and they are happy and supported in their learning.

As an academy we have high expectations of staff, we expect staff to challenge our students and themselves. We set high standards and aim to display these in all that we do. Working for Trinity Academy Sowerby Bridge is rewarding, we can offer a fantastic environment, excellent CPD programmes and a range of opportunities to progress. These ambitions are shared across all schools within the trust.
