Job overview

Bury Grammar School aims to be a leading academic institution and the school of first choice for pupils, parents and staff in the area.

We are seeking to appoint, from January 2020, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic Teacher of Economics & Business to join an outward-looking and high achieving faculty.  The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher, passionate about their subject, and must be willing to contribute to the wider life of the school.

The Faculty

At Bury Grammar School, the Faculty of Social & Computer Sciences is a major contributor to overall success at both GCSE and A level.  With Business, Computer Science, Economics and Psychology on offer, students are given the opportunity to take a broad and exciting selection of subjects that not only further their academic knowledge, but equips them with transferable skills which will help them in undergraduate study and their future employment.  Studying the science of people can tell us a lot about the world beyond our own experience.

Social scientists can help explain how society works - from the causes of UK unemployment, the impact of globalisation on business performance, to the reasons behind aggressive behaviour.

In addition, Computer Science equips students with essential problem solving skills through the practical application of theory and techniques.  The faculty consists of nine members of staff who are wholly committed to enabling students to fulfil their true potential in each discipline, alongside providing excellent enrichment activities, which broaden the student experience.

The Department

Economics & Business at Bury Grammar School is a high achieving department, gaining excellent results at both GCSE and A level.  Economics & Business are two of the most popular A level choices within the Sixth Form and we inspire many students to continue with their studies in both disciplines at degree level.

The team has a wealth of experience in helping students to prepare successful UCAS applications to many prestigious universities.  The Economics & Business Department plays an integral role within the Faculty of Social and Computer Sciences and consists of six members of staff, four of which teach full time in the subjects, including the Head of Department.  The Department is responsible for the teaching of AQA GCSE & A Level Business and AQA A Level Economics.  The department has the sole use of four classrooms across the campus, each equipped with a PC and a multimedia projector.  The Department has a strong team ethos and is continually striving to provide outstanding innovative teaching, which simultaneously stretches and supports all learners.

Economics and Business A Level attract large numbers of students within the Sixth Form; we currently have four groups in Year 12 and three in Year 13 across the two subjects.  The Department also provides excellent extracurricular opportunities for students including Young Enterprise, The Tenner Challenge, BASE and the IFS Student Investor Challenge.  We also offer extra workshop sessions to give small group and one to one support according to the needs of each student.

As a department, we are committed to enabling our students to benefit from the very best standards of teaching and are proud of our departmental culture of collaboration.  At such an exciting time in terms of the growth of our department, we look forward to welcoming a dedicated and passionate teacher to take their place on our successful team.

About Bury Grammar School

Bury Grammar School is situated in the heart of Bury, Lancashire and is widely recognised as one of the top independent schools in the North West of England. Currently there are over 1270 girls and boys on roll.

Our School is a family of independent, selective, day schools for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, which combine a strong tradition of academic excellence with the best in modern educational practice. The School has a long and rich history of excellence extending back 450 years and our staff, pupils and alumni are proud of the School’s long-standing traditions. Our modern, inclusive School community welcomes students and staff from different faiths and cultures. It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Through our unique blend of single-sex education from ages 7-16 and co-education in our Pre-School, Infant School and Sixth Form, we offer the ‘best of both worlds’ for our pupils at every stage of their educational journey. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

One of our key strategic objectives is to maintain, recruit, nurture and develop first class teaching and support staff. You can be sure that as an employer we are focused on creating an outstanding workplace for all our staff so that we can attract, retain and engage talented individuals who have a desire to transform the lives of others.

A successful education is very much about team work and every member of staff at Bury Grammar School recognises that together we have the opportunity to change our pupils’ lives. Whether this is part of our fantastic catering team who provide our pupils with nutritious meals, our dedicated estates team who maintain our beautiful grounds or as a member of our inspiring teaching staff, everyone has an important part to play.
