Located in the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Birkdale School is a boys’ independent school. First established in 1904, the school accepts boys aged 4-18, and runs a co-educational sixth form. A day school, Birkdale is split into prep and senior sections. Around 1000 pupils attend the school, which has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation over the years. Entrance to the school is selective, prep school pupils are expected to take part in a taster-day (including an interview with the headmaster) while older entrants into the senior school are given an entrance examination. The sixth form accepts pupils from a range of local schools in addition to Birkdale, with selection being done on the basis of GCSE results.
