The Economics and Business Department is a thriving and energetic department which significantly contributes to Sixth Form education at St George’s in both results and numbers taking the subjects. Next academic year we are due to have 58 students studying Economics and 50 Business, making it one of the most popular Sixth Form departments in the school. There are currently 3 full-time and 1 part-time teacher within the department. We are seeking a dynamic and self-motivated teacher to deliver Economics and Business to both the Lower and Upper Sixth. The ability to teach both subjects is desirable although not essential.
The Department follows the AQA specifications for both Economics and Business and our results are consistently above the national average. This year we gained 63% A*-A grades and 96% A*-B grades in Economics. In Business 20% of grades were at A*-A, and 60% of grades at A*-B. There are presently two sets for Economics and three sets for Business in the Lower Sixth, whilst in the Upper Sixth there are four sets for Economics and three sets for Business.
The Department ethos is to deliver creative and varied teaching styles. We use practical case studies, project based work, IT-based learning and written work depending on the topic being covered. Classroom discussions are considered vital and draw on real-life examples in order to develop understanding of the subject matter.
The Department makes an active contribution to the College’s extra-curricular programme by running activities such as Young Enterprise, the ICAEW Base competition and the Student Investor programme. We enter students for national competitions such as the Young Economist of the Year, with one student recently a runner-up in the IEA essay competition. A large proportion of our students go onto study Economics/Business at Russell Group universities and we also have achieved Oxbridge success in recent years.
Single staff accommodation may be available on-site.
The deadline for applications is 4pm on Tuesday 22 January and interviews are likely to take place shortly after this date.
