Job overview

Full time post available, but part time applications welcome

We believe that the Royal Grammar School Guildford is a special place to teach Economics and welcome applications from teachers of all backgrounds and experience levels to join our friendly department.

We are looking for someone who is excited by the opportunity to specialise and exclusively teach A Level Economics, on a full or part time basis, to a student body that loves learning about Economics - we are consistently the second most popular A Level choice behind Mathematics.

As an academically selective school, we are fortunate to be surrounded by an able student body with excellent learning habits, who take an active role in their education. In return they need teachers with excellent subject knowledge who can not only teach the subject with precision and clarity, but also create safe inclusive spaces where they can discuss economic issues and develop a critical eye for the subject.

You would be joining a department of six full-time Economics teachers. We work closely together to plan and deliver the course and are committed to developing and reflecting on our approach to teaching and learning.

We believe a diverse teaching staff can only benefit our department and our students and proactively encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds for this role. You do not need to have taught in an independent school before to thrive at the RGS and we also have a proven track record of developing unqualified and early career teachers within our department. We welcome applications from all well-qualified and enthusiastic individuals, regardless of their previous teaching experience.

Our department is situated in our new building, consisting of rooms, purpose built for our A Level classes, with student numbers ranging from 8 to 12 students. In addition, we have a dedicated department office and subject library where we can plan, mark and collaborate. We are a Microsoft school with a one device to one student policy, so our students are well versed in using the latest educational technology to enrich their learning.

Like all teachers at the RGS, you would also be responsible for positively impacting our students’ education outside the classroom. This could be pastorally as a tutor, delivering your choice of General Studies course or extra-curricular activity, coaching one of our many sports teams or motivating a group through their Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Our aim is to match our needs to our staff passions and we can provide training and support in any areas you wish to develop.

Benefits:

As well as a competitive salary, well above the national scale, we offer a generous relocation package including a mortgage subsidy scheme to those moving from outside the area, discounted fees for staff children (subject to entrance criteria), private health cover and a fantastic lunch served in our dedicated teachers’ common room area.

If you feel this role is of interest to you, but you would like to ask further questions or discuss the role before making an application, please email the Head of Department, Mr. Stratford, directly at JDS@RGSG.co.uk

Vacancy information, which contains full details of the post, can be found on the School’s website www.rgsg.co.uk

Closing date for applications: Applications will be reviewed on submission

The Royal Grammar School has a responsibility for and commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The person appointed to this post will be required to apply for an enhanced Disclosure Certificate from the DBS.

Located in the historic town of Guildford, the Royal Grammar School, dating back to 1509, is a leading independent day school for boys aged 11 – 18. Consistently regarded as one of the top three boys’ schools in the country, the RGS combines academic excellence with a passionate commitment to pastoral care and co-curricular opportunity in a friendly, supportive community of approximately 950 students and 120 teaching staff.

The original Tudor building, constructed between 1557 and 1586, is still used by the students; in addition, development of the site continues to provide facilities conducive to teaching and learning in the 21st century and to performance in all areas at the highest level.  The School is committed to nurturing its staff and a structured, bespoke approach to professional development means that the whole community is united in a desire to improve, progress and be enriched.
