Job overview

Full Time Teacher of English and Drama – Fixed Term

Required from Easter 2023

ECT/MPS/UPS (Fringe) (£29,344 - £44,919)

We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

 Are you an English or Drama teacher looking to teach in a true community with “Excellence” at its heart? We are looking for an inspiring teacher to join our popular English and Drama Departments. Starting at Easter 2023 and for one term fixed term in the first instance, this may be an ideal opportunity for someone looking to commence or re-establish their teaching career.

 Both subjects are popular at all Key Stages at St Mary’s, with established courses at both GCSE and A-Level. We have experienced and dedicated staff and superb facilities, with newly modernised classrooms and two large Drama teaching spaces: a black box studio and a traditional school hall as well as dressing rooms and a well-stocked costume store. The successful candidate would be expected to teach English and Drama mainly at KS3, across the full ability range.

 St Mary’s students go on to study at universities including Oxbridge and Russell Group, or train at elite Drama schools such as East 15, Arts Ed and Italia Conti. The school offers excellent professional development and guidance, with a highly effective and supportive CPD programme.

 Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity. Our Surveys show that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Marys, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents. We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.

 We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants. St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

 Apply in writing using the forms available on our website www.stmarys.net: Teacher Application Form, Consent to Obtain References Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form. Applicants are reminded that they should read the Notes to Applicants before completing an application. Please note only applications on St Mary’s forms will be accepted. Please contact Tom Johnston, Headteacher Designate t.johnston@stmarys.net or Recruitment@stmarys.net to submit an application or for more information.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
