Job overview

The post would particularly suit teachers with a strong interest in CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and a willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school.

This is primarily a classroom teaching post, and a full-time teacher can expect to have up to 21 hours of classroom teaching a week, as well as contributing to the International School’s programme of activities (some of which run after the end of the school day and at weekends). The successful candidate will also take the role of form tutor, with additional pastoral responsibilities.

The Department

The EAL department at d’Overbroeck’s is a large and thriving department, with currently eight teachers across the International School and Sixth Form. In the Sixth Form, EAL is delivered as a compulsory additional course, alongside a full suite of A Levels, to those students whose entry level in English requires additional support, and/or those requiring an English language qualification to progress to university. We prepare students for the IELTS exam and also teach English for Academic Purposes. EAL lessons are designed to support students’ development of cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP). Y12 students also receive additional 1:1 tutorials which focus on specific subject areas in order to develop and facilitate learning.

In the International School, all students study English as a core element of the various courses they are undertaking, including IGCSE English Second Language exams in Year 11 and Year 10. In Year 9 we prepare students for the Trinity Integrated Skills examinations. The highest ability students also complete their GCSE English First Language alongside their IGCSE English Second Language preparation. Apart from exam lessons, students in the International Section also have extensive reading classes and lessons on academic language skills.

EAL teachers are based at the International School (TIS) and generally take leading roles in the wider life of TIS. The EAL teaching team supports subject teachers in order to embed language development across the curriculum and promote progress and attainment in students’ main subjects.

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
