The ability to teach KS3 and KS4 English and to connect with disadvantaged students is essential. An ability to teach A Level English Language or Literature A Level and/or KS 3 Humanities would also be desirable.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate excellence in their approach to teaching and learning in the classroom.
To ensure we appoint the best candidate, we are initially offering this role as a fixed term contract and are open to applications from those able to offer a minimum of 0.6 FTE. The role may be offered on a permanent basis for the right candidate.
Bristol Cathedral Choir School is an academy that specialises in Mathematics and Music. The academy became part of the Cathedral Schools Trust (a Multi Academy Trust) in 2016. As a Teaching School, we are able to offer a coherent, high quality programme of continuing professional development. In addition, there may be the opportunity to progress towards designation as a Specialist Leader of Education, depending on the individual career history of the candidate.
The Faculty of English and Drama is led by Mr Ian Barraclough and currently consists of nine members of staff. Examination results consistently reflect excellent progress; in 2018, GCSE English results were the best in Bristol state schools.
Key Stage Three English
All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are allocated eight periods of sixty minutes in English over a two week timetable. Students are taught in five House groups of mixed ability. There is a further support set in each year for students who are struggling to meet the minimum national expectations for their age group. Whilst following a course drawn from the National Curriculum and structured according to the Revised Framework for English, teachers are actively encouraged to teach creatively. In the absence of the KS3 SATS, our students currently complete standardised assessments each term.
Key Stage Four English
All students at KS4 study a course in GCSE English Language and English Literature (AQA). They are allocated eight periods of sixty minutes over a two week timetable. The Year groups of 120 students in Years 10 and 11 are each divided into five sets, corresponding to higher, middle and lower ability. To enable transferral of students between sets at any given time, teachers pursue a common course structure. The vast majority of our students are entered for examinations in both English Language and English Literature.
All students who are in care with the local authority or who have been previously in care benefit from additional small group or one-to-one English lessons. The priority students have weekly contact with their academic English mentor where they are pre-taught the curriculum with the intent that they practice leadership skills in the classroom.
Key Stage Five English Literature and Language
Students may opt to study English Literature or English Language as an A Level. They are allocated eight periods of sixty minutes per week. Students follow the OCR English Literature specification and/or the AQA English Language specification.
We aim to deliver courses that are assured and confident and that are able to satisfy the students’ thirst for extended knowledge at this level.
