Job overview
Teacher of English
Full time
To Start April or September
Salary – competitive, dependent on experience
We require a graduate of English Literature to join a highly successful and forward-thinking English Department to teach in the senior school including Oxbridge preparation and application at this thriving girls’ Independent School. Applications are welcomed both from experienced teachers and NQTs.
The English Department is already a highly successful Department within the school in terms of the students’ enjoyment and value of classes, and in public examination results, but one always looking forwards to new initiatives and developments as ways to inspire our students, to animate, enrich and add purpose to their experiences with literature, reading and writing through independent learning. The Department wishes to bring an appreciation of the power of language and its integral role in deepening an appreciation of our world to the forefront of the school.
Our desire to have our students achieve higher than they thought possible every year and particularly in national examinations is every day balanced by our desire to keep the true purpose of studying reading and writing alive. We take preparation for national examinations very seriously as foundations for the students’ careers but are equally focused on the importance of introducing the students to the wider world beyond Pipers Lane; the real meaning of research; critical thinking; debating; experiences outside of the classroom; current affairs; residential courses; author visits, reading new authors and even discovering what a library really can be. The emphases in the Department are on the students’ learning rather than teaching and on active, critical, independent learning.
The English Department already runs the Senior Debating Society entering the English Speaking Union National Competition and others, and the Inter-House Competition and the Junior Debating Club, a residential week at the Arvon Foundation in Devon and a residential experience of the First World War battlefields for the Sixth Form. The Department runs the School Magazine, Aquila; Hacker, the newspaper for young journalists; and a variety of Clubs and Activities at the junior and senior levels (see separate document) which organise competitions and an English Society. Trips centre around Core Trips for each Year - currently a major production for Years 7 and 8, a workshop day at Shakespeare’s Globe and an exploration of Shakespeare’s London for Year 9, and a day at the Stratford Properties and an RSC performance for the new L6 - and trips are regularly made to museums and other cultural events including Intelligence Squared debates, BBC recordings, poetry readings etc.. We now have student Subject Leaders at GCSE, L6 and U6 levels.
The Department subscribes to Learning Outside the Classroom and makes full use of the outdoor classrooms, the school grounds and the world outside. The Department sees working outside as the foremost resource in showing the students that life, and therefore English, takes place outside the classroom walls.
It is the aim of the English Department to have every student leave every lesson with the window to her world open a little bit wider and for her to have her desire and confidence notched a little higher. It is the aim of the Department to have every student never quite sure what she will encounter when she opens the door to the classroom.
An application form and recruitment information can be obtained from the HR Department, email hr@piperscorner.co.uk, or downloaded from our website www.piperscorner.co.uk
Completed application forms and a covering letter should be addressed to the Headmistress and returned to HR via the email address above.

Pipers Corner is an independent day school for girls aged 4–18. From Pre-Prep through to Sixth Form there is a focus on academic excellence as girls are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential. Academically successful, our girls progress to further study at Oxbridge and other top universities or specialist dance, drama and music colleges.
Set in 36 acres of Chiltern countryside, the school is less than one hour from central London (40 minute rail links to Marylebone Station in London) and 45 minutes from Heathrow airport, 4 miles north of High Wycombe and 2 miles from Great Missenden.
The Pipers Corner environment allows girls to thrive. Whatever their strengths, the girls are challenged and supported as they pursue their own unique learning journeys. This approach enables them to fulfil their academic and personal potential and emerge as mature, confident and independent young women.
