Job overview

 A  teacher of  English is sought for Southern International School Hat Yai, a rapidly growing, co-educational, pre-school to age 18 Cambridge International School in the prosperous and friendly southern Thai city of Hat Yai. We are an accredited examination centre for Cambridge International Examinations and  received the  ISQM Silver accreditation through the Education Development Trust at our first attempt in June 2019.

Southern International School (SIH) is a young and ambitious school with a ‘can-do’ attitude and we are looking for a teacher who can bring a love of English to the classroom, develop enquiring minds and inspire our students to achieve the best results possible.

The successful candidate would be expected to teach English across the secondary school and work with the Primary section to ensure the strong progress made there is built upon at Key Stage 3 and beyond. In Key Stage 4 we offer English, English as a Second Language and Literature to Cambridge IGCSE level, depending on student potential.  Given that most of our students have English as their second language, the abilities to support language learning, differentiate effectively and adopt a patient approach are vital.

As the only English teacher (other than EAL support) in the secondary section, this is a key role in the school. We would expect the new post holder to be as proactive and determined to take the subject and the school onto an even higher level. You will only be considered for this post if you have English as your first language, as noted in the Person Specification.

There is the possibility of a leadership role (Secondary Leader) with this post.  The successful candidate will play a key role in Secondary and whole school development as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. For this  role we are looking for someone with leadership and management experience in the secondary section, so the leadership role would not suit a NQT, but the English teaching post is open to NQTs.

Our children are mostly Thai and from other Asian countries with parents who are committed to giving their children an international education. Our parents are extremely loyal and supportive, and participate in many school events and activities.

The successful candidate will be joining the school at an exciting period in its development. There are opportunities to develop yourself professionally and personally in a safe, happy, supportive environment. Hat Yai in Songkhla province has grown from a small but busy commercial town into a lively but manageable city of a little over a million, surrounded by rice paddies, forested hills and waterfalls. The tourist hot spots of Krabi, Trang and Phuket are easily accessible for long weekend trips, but there are several unspoiled destinations much closer to home. New upmarket bistros and restaurants are springing up seemingly overnight, adding to the cosmopolitan feel of this welcoming city. Accommodation is cheap and varied, from Thai-style houses to newly built, self-contained condominiums with shared swimming pools. Hat Yai is a wonderful, safe city that provides a great quality of life, and this partly explains why so many of our staff choose to renew their contracts.

COVID-19 statement:

We feel relatively safe in Southern Thailand and compared to most countries the infection rate is very low. Given the precautions taken by the Thai government to keep it that way, it is extremely difficult to get foreign teachers into Thailand, but we have managed to recruit overseas teachers in August 2020 and January 2021. Our admin team are excellent and incredibly supportive.

At the time of writing, the preconditions are:

A Certificate of Entry issued by the immigration department (we help you get that)

A Visa ( we help you get that and pay for it)

Health Insurance covering COVID-19 ( we get you that and pay for it)

A clear COVID-19 'Fit to Fly' test no more than 72 hours before departure (you pay for that)

A flight ( you arrange and pay for, and we reimburse up to THB 20k on arrival)

Alternative State Quarantine for 15 days in Bangkok ( we pay for that)

Given the uncertainty of your actual arrival date, Your contract would normally start from your first day of work.

About Southern International School HatYai

The Southern International School Hat Yai was established in 2015 to serve the needs of both Thai nationals and expatriates in the region who wish their children to have a broad and balanced international education. School enrolment currently stands at approximately 190 students with classes ranging from Early Years to Year 11. The Primary section follows the International Primary Curriculum whilst the curriculum for Years 7-11 is based on the National Curriculum of England and follows Cambridge Secondary 1 and IGCSE.

In June 2019 we were awarded the  ISQM Silver accreditation, a massive achievement for such a young school. Our report describes us a '"good school" and notes that "Students' personal development and the school's partnership with parents are outstanding." It adds, "Teachers' subject knowledge is outstanding" and "Teachers plan lessons that are exciting and interesting."

At a recent marketing event we had a tremendous amount of support from our  current parents, who spoke openly to prospective parents about the trust they placed in our school and the amount of individual care and attention paid to their children by our teaching staff. The students feel nurtured, cared for and have many opportunities to learn 21st Century skills and eternal values. We are a happy school.
