Teacher of English (Full Time, Sept 2024)

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic English teacher to join our excellent team. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of the lower school (Years 6 to 9) English curriculum, GCSE English Language & GCSE English Literature to Years 10 and 11, with potential future involvement in teaching A-Level English Literature. We are looking for an ambitious professional, with a proven track record of raising attainment across GCSE and (ideally) post-16 groups, to join our successful and well-resourced department.  

The English department is situated in its own building, located centrally in the school. We are currently a team of 5 dedicated teachers, and are seeking a sixth member of the team as the school is growing in numbers. Pupils benefit from a fully resourced library, and the opportunity to enjoy library lessons in there as part of the lower school English curriculum. In addition, all pupils are provided with Microsoft Surface devices, enabling portable and seamless access to resources outside of school.  

Our lower school curriculum is challenging, rigorous and engaging, offering pupils in Years 6 to 9 the chance to engage in a broad range of texts and materials designed to develop their knowledge and skills in all areas of literacy, reading, writing and spoken word. In Year 10, all pupils are entered for GCSE English language. Most pupils also sit GCSE English Literature in Year 11. The school’s results in English are outstanding as a result: in 2023 96% of pupils achieved grade 4+, compared to 64% nationally.  

English is well-loved by pupils at Langley, and pupils are given a wealth of super-curricular opportunities in the subject, including a wide range of trips, visits, speakers and unique opportunities, such as the annual ‘Year 6 Balloon Debate’ across both the Senior and Prep sites. 

As a Teacher of English at Langley School, you will be a reflective practitioner and team player, confident in your subject knowledge and keen to work collaboratively within the department, developing its curriculum to help pupils meet the challenge of examinations as well as foster enjoyment. We value those who are conscientious and passionate, with the desire to impart their love of the subject to their classes and fellow teachers. 

The ability to plan and deliver innovative lessons that are suitably differentiated to meet the needs of all pupils and integrate the use of e-learning, is paramount. Our ideal candidate would be willing to take an active role in ensuring the English Department maintains its high profile by promoting the subject within the school and wider community and organising and running subject related extra-curricular activities such as trips, speakers and competitions as well as wider school events.
