The Role

The Headmaster is seeking to appoint a lively, passionate and dedicated individual to teach English within a highly successful department.

The successful candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm and passion for English and be capable of teaching up to A-Level. They should be well placed to generate and sustain a high degree of motivation in all pupils, and to contribute to the department in providing and delivering excellent teaching.

This could be a full or part time role; the successful candidate will be required to teach at least 0.8 of a full timetable.


The School

The King’s School, Gloucester has a rich academic tradition dating back to its founding in 1541. It houses the longest-serving classroom in Europe and is held in high esteem amongst the local and wider community, winning Gloucestershire Independent School of the Year in 2020 and 2021, and being Highly Commended again in 2022. Following the 2022 ISI Inspection, King’s was proud to be declared ‘excellent in all areas’.


The Department

The Department of English is a dynamic and very supportive one in which to work. It consists of four full-time members of staff and two part-time members of staff and has particularly close links with the excellent Library staff, the Drama Department and the Learning Skills Department.

In recent years, King’s has achieved amongst its best ever GCSE results, and results in the Department are excellent with a 100% pass rate for IGCSE English Language and 60% grades 9-7. English Literature is a popular subject and the take up at A-Level is very good with a high number of A/A* grades every year.

We are an OCR Ambassador School and part of the Lit in Colour Scheme. Several of our team have experience as examiners and we enjoy discussing subject pedagogy at our fortnightly meetings. We have a particular enthusiasm for the teaching of Shakespeare and run regular workshops, theatre trips and visits to conferences. Above all, we aim to inspire our pupils; help them enjoy language and literature; challenge them to think about things deeply; wake up their talents and stir their imaginations, feelings and thoughts; and enable them to be critical, but articulate and creative citizens of the twenty-first century. We are proud to have pupils, every year, go on to study English at top universities.


Main Duties

The following shall be deemed to be included in the professional duties which a teacher may be required to perform:

  • First-class, innovative teaching throughout the School in a manner appropriate to pupils' ages and abilities;
  • Assessing and recording pupils' progress in accordance with departmental and School policies;
  • Attending and contributing to departmental meetings;
  • Monitoring the work and progress of pupils, including those with specific learning needs;
  • Maintaining professional skills through INSET and the School’s Continuing Professional Development programme;
  • Being proactive in exploring innovative ways of delivering English through the curriculum;
  • Producing displays to create an enhanced learning environment;
  • Setting high personal and professional standards in all aspects within your subject area and acting as a professional role model for the department in general;
  • Contributing to the construction, monitoring and delivery of a teaching programme for your subject area at KS3, KS4 & KS5;
  • Contributing to the coordination and standardising of centre-assessed work at KS5 and KS4 and the preparation of the material for moderation on request;
  • Contributing to the coordination of the setting and marking of trial exams at KS5 and KS4;
  • Helping to organise appropriate extracurricular opportunities and experiences (e.g. educational trips) to enhance the enrichment and learning of students in your subject area, and also contributing to the provision of the general extra-curricular programme of the English department;
  • Helping to initiate and promote links with Junior School where appropriate;
  • Helping to promote partnership and links with educational organisations outside of King’s;
  • Promoting the awareness of relevant Career opportunities and experiences for students;
  • Contributing to the department’s cross curricular initiatives, cross subject projects and activities programme;
  • Taking part in the pastoral life of the School as a Form Tutor or Cover Tutor;
  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact;
  • Any other tasks or responsibilities that may reasonably be assigned by the Headmaster.


Personal Profile

The successful candidate should have the following:

  • A degree related to English;
  • Experience of teaching and raising attainment at KS3-5;
  • Enthusiasm and passion for the subject, the School and the pupils;
  • Dynamic, effective teaching strategies that engage all learners;
  • Excellent written and oral communication, numerical and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to work under pressure, plan and prioritise own workload and remain professional at all times;
  • Strong people skills, including a personal warmth and good humour;
  • Ability to deliver high standards, accuracy and attention to detail, meeting all deadlines;
  • Willingness to undertake further professional development;
  • Further post-graduate qualifications, experience relating to English and PGCE / QTS are desirable.
