Job overview

Suitable for ECTs

A successful, popular and high-achieving school with around 1000 pupils, The Hurst School combines outstanding facilities with a real commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, the school is situated in a stunning rural location on Berkshire-Hampshire border with easy access from Basingstoke, Reading, Newbury and surrounding areas.

The English Department at The Hurst is a committed team of passionate, experienced teachers, with high expectations of ourselves and our classes, who aim to empower pupils with a mastery of language and to enrich them through the study of literature, accessing a wide and varied curriculum in Key Stages 3 and 4.

The Department has undergone changes to leadership and examination syllabi to ensure regularly high outcomes at GCSE in both English Language and Literature, and to encourage the further study of our subject Post-16. Progress made by pupils across the whole ability range is improving, and recent Centre- and Teacher-Assessed Grading processes confirm this trend.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspirational teacher to join our group of 9 professional and dynamic English staff to deliver the KS3 and KS4 English Language and Literature curriculum. Our team work collegiately, in order to share expertise and reduce additional workload. We are also active on Social Media with English Department accounts on Twitter and Instagram, and use the ‘Educake’ platform for setting of homework and revision.

Located mostly on the upper floor of the South Block, the department has 8 dedicated English classrooms, an intervention space and large staff work area. English teaching spaces are well-equipped with texts and resources, projectors and sound systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a friendly and supportive school to help deliver outstanding lessons and ensure the best outcomes for all of our students. Applications are welcome from ECTs as well as experienced teachers. The benefits package includes free on-site parking; access to an on-site gym and an on-site nursery.

This school and Hampshire County Council are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment. All successful candidates will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Check as well as other relevant pre-employment checks.

Please apply to the Headteacher by Monday 7 February 2022.  Please note that we reserve the right to appoint prior to the closing date so early applications are welcomed.

The Hurst School is a successful and highly regarded school of 1000 students aged 11-16, situated within easy driving distance of Reading, Newbury and Basingstoke. The school enjoys a semi-rural location and sits on a large site with green surroundings.

The school has a strong ethos and is driven by its values of ambition, commitment, respect, excellence and community. It was last rated “Good” by Ofsted in March 2019.

Our aim is to provide an excellent education for all our students; an education which brings out the best in them and prepares them for success in life and the world of work. This is echoed in our vision: ‘Building minds and character for future life success, preparing and inspiring our students for a rapidly changing world’, by developing confidence, resilience and independence alongside a love of learning.

Our curriculum is designed to provide young people with the core knowledge and cultural capital needed both for further academic study, while enabling them to develop as citizens and engage effectively in the world beyond school. The curriculum is designed to be balanced and rigorous, in order to maximise students’ knowledge, as well as their personal development.

The principle of education with character is delivered through the curriculum at every opportunity. Everything students learn in school, alongside the taught curriculum, is seen as part of the whole curriculum. This includes the approach to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, as well as the extra-curricular provision. Our personal learning programme includes opportunities to get involved in these extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, drama and trips, creating an environment to inspire and develop students beyond the classroom.

Working with the wider community we pride ourselves on the friendliness of the school and the close relationships between staff and pupils as well as the care and guidance that we provide. Employees of The Hurst also benefit from free on-site parking, an on-site nursery and an on-site gym.
