We currently have a one-year vacancy for a Teacher of English. The position may include the option for a KS coordinator role in the Senior School.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual, passionate about their subject and able to enthuse students across the age and ability range. In addition, we require someone who is able to contribute creatively to the work of the team, produce and share resources and participate in the ongoing development of schemes of work. The level of teaching in the department is outstanding and we therefore aim to recruit excellent practitioners with strong teaching skills.
The successful applicants will be well qualified, enthusiastic and experienced in the teaching of language and literature at all levels. The appointment will teach across the age and ability range including IGCSE and IB. Experience of teaching IB is therefore preferable.
English and EAL are crucial in a school like St George’s where only about 25% of the students have English as their first language. A further 40% are bilingual and for the remainder English may be a third, or even fourth, language.
There are at present six full-time members of the English team and three part-time staff. We are fully mixed ability so differentiation is a key element of our planning. We also run additional intervention sessions for those who need extra support. Classes are relatively small and rarely exceed 20 in a group.
We follow our own syllabus at KS3 (based roughly on the UK National Curriculum and US NCTE guidelines). We teach EdExcel IGCSE English Literature and Language A to most students. However, a very small group completes IGCSE English as a Second Language in Year 10 and if successful EdExcel IGCSE English Language A in Year 11. In the sixth form the vast majority of students study IB English, most choosing Language A, Language and Literature or Literature, with a small group of Language B students.
