Job overview

Cambridge International School – Teacher of English Language and Literature

Cambridge International School (age range 3 to 18) is situated in central Europe just 50 kilometres / 30 miles from Vienna. Located in Bratislava, the modern yet historic capital of Slovakia, we are a young and expanding international school teaching Cambridge Primary, Secondary 1, IGCSE, AS and A Levels, as well as the English National curriculum. We have small class sizes (maximum 18) and are well resourced throughout. The school is housed in new buildings of a 5* standard with large, airy and light classrooms. Students are generally from well-to-do local families or are the children of diplomats or expatriates working in Bratislava for international companies. Despite being a non-selective school, our results are outstanding with places achieved by students last year at such institutions as Cambridge University, Kings College London, the University of Warwick and universities in Spain, France, the USA and elsewhere. 50% of our staff is from the UK with others from the USA, Slovakia and other countries.

As an established but young school with splendid new facilities to accommodate additional classes, we aim to increase student numbers over coming years. This expansion of the school necessitates the employment of further staff for September 2017. We are now seeking an additional UK or similarly qualified teacher of English Language and Literature to A Level. Applicants will only be considered if they are graduates in English Language and Literature with a recognised teaching qualification in the subjects. Very important to us is that teachers must have energy and drive and be able to motivate and inspire students. We are looking for a dedicated professional teacher who will contribute towards our academic programme though just as importantly, to our outstanding staff body and ethos. All applicants must be fluent English speakers and have experience of the British education system either in the UK, or in a British curriculum international school abroad. Experience in international schools, though desirable, is not essential. We are willing to consider recently qualified and soon to qualify teachers who display the outstanding qualities we are seeking; including organisational skills, initiative, flexibility, independence and a strong belief in a student-centred approach to education. A warm, friendly, happy disposition is a must as an harmonious family atmosphere lies at the heart of our ethos and is very much valued by our students, their parents and our staff.

Bratislava is a very pleasant, historic, central European city with daily low-cost flights from several UK airports. The city is a mix of modern and old with very significant development having occurred over recent years. It is as well-resourced as any large British city with entertainment spots (multiplex cinemas, theatres, concert venues, sports arenas, international restaurants and bars), shopping centres (Tesco, Next and Debenhams are all to be found) and a very attractive old town, as well as much, much more. The city’s location, being just an hour from Vienna, two hours from Budapest and three hours from Prague make it an ideal low cost spot from which to explore the major historic capitals of central Europe. Other central, eastern and southern European countries can also easily be reached by budget airline from Bratislava’s new international airport.  So all-in-all, this is a great opportunity for a young and adventurous as well as more mature teaching professional seeking a school where they can make a real difference. Teachers tend to stay fairly long term in Bratislava which is a reflection of the nature of the school and of the comfortable lifestyle here in the city and wider region. This is a genuine expansion position as we move two forms through secondary where before there was just one.

Slovakia is part of the European Union and so work permits are not currently required for UK citizens. We offer a renewable contract, good financial package and excellent working conditions, including the small class sizes and very spacious, well equipped new buildings. Apply by email, including a full C.V. and letter of application, to: recruitment@cambridgeschool.eu. Please mark the subject of the email as English.  Interviews will be conducted in England or by video conference for those currently abroad.
