Lathallan School is a mixed, mainstream, all-through independent school in Johnshaven, Aberdeenshire. It has approximately 282 students aged 1-18.

Lathallan School was originally located in Fife, but moved to Brotherton Castle in September 1949 after a fire. In 1950, the castle and its grounds were sold to the school governors and, in 1976, the school became co-educational.

In 2004, the adjacent Lathallan Nursery was opened, and the school began to welcome senior pupils in September 2006. In 2016, a new state-of-the-art science centre was opened.

Vision and values

Lathallan School’s motto is ‘Vincit qui se vincit’, which means ‘he who conquers himself, conquers all’. The school strives to provide an environment that allows each pupil to achieve in academic and extra-curricular activities. Teachers hope to train students to become confident, independent individuals. They deliver an exciting and varied curriculum and develop strong relationships between the school and the wider community.

The Scottish Curriculum for Excellence dictates the four main areas the school concentrates on: students need to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. There are eight curriculum areas: expressive arts, health and wellbeing, languages, maths, religious and moral studies, sciences, social studies, and technologies.

Pupils are supported to achieve the highest level of literacy, numeracy and cognitive skills. Lathallan Schools offer activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and languages such as Mandarin to further help students towards excellence.
