Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 32 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 15 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.
Newbattle Community High School is a non-denominational secondary school that meets the learning needs of pupils from ages 11 to 18. Our current roll is 859 pupils. The school was opened in 1969 and currently serves the communities of Mayfield, Easthouses, Newtongrange, Gorebridge, North Middleton, Temple and the surrounding areas.
The school is less than 3 miles by road from the Edinburgh bypass and this is one of the factors that have caused significant amounts of new housing to be built around the community in the last decade which will lead to a growth in school roll. There are very good public transport links with Edinburgh including the nearby Newtongrange railway station, the Waverley Line that runs from Edinburgh to the Borders.
Construction started in February 2016 on a new school and the building is due for completion in spring 2018. The new school building will go a long way to ensuring that Newbattle will have a bright and exciting future for our pupils and community.
