Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a Teacher of English to our new school which opened its doors in September 2021, and which serves the local communities of Middleton and Heywood. This role would suit a proactive and resilient person with a passion for teaching the English curriculum and committed to supporting all students, so they achieve their full potential. We are a small but growing school; currently we have years 7, 8 and 9 on roll and are significantly oversubscribed.

English Department

Edgar Wood Academy’s English Department is made up of a team of three subject specialists who are highly committed to providing an outstanding English curriculum. The English department is highly motivated, dynamic and passionate about ensuring progress for all pupils. Extensive research takes place within the department to ensure that curriculum planning plus pedagogy is relevant and purposeful. We have developed an ambitious curriculum for Key Stage 3, one that is rich in knowledge. The curriculum has been carefully planned and sequenced so that knowledge is built upon. Concepts are mapped out from Year 7 to Year 9 to ensure that pupils are building complexity at all times. Whole novels and plays are explored in full by each year group. These texts have been chosen carefully so that they promote depth in learning. Each year group has a bespoke poetry anthology that is aligned to the core knowledge and skills that pupils explore when studying whole class texts. Though the study is rigorous, even at this level, we are keen to ensure that learning is ambitious and engaging. Classes are largely mixed ability at Year 7 with some setting in Year 8. The English department is very passionate about ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their background, have access to an ambitious and well sequenced curriculum. The department is well resourced with texts for all pupils, smartboards and visualisers in each classroom.

At Edgar Wood Academy our Positive Discipline approach is one of mutual respect and compassionate rigour; our aim is that our students do the right thing by choice rather than because they must.

Edgar Wood Academy is part of the Altus Education Partnership and as such our staff benefit from a wide range of support and development within a collaborative community.

To work at Edgar Wood Academy, you must aspire to be an outstanding colleague, with a willingness to share and learn. We wish to appointment someone who will help us to make a positive difference to the lives of young people in the borough. You will need to have a flexible approach, as you may be required from time to time to set aside subject interests to consider the broader interests of the School and your own professional development.

In return, we promise a supportive and enjoyable working environment and the resources needed to carry out the role to the highest standards, including a bespoke professional development programme to support you with your future career aspirations.

Further details about the role can be found in the Application Pack.
