Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic A Level teacher to join a well-established and well-resourced English department for September 2023. The department comprises four full time teachers and one part time teacher, following the Edexcel A Level (2015) course (9ET0) with the Drama, Prose and Poetry units and there are over 75 students in all. Experience of delivering GCSE or IGCSE English for retake candidates would be a significant advantage, as we offer this opportunity to all students. This is a full time role in which the teacher will take responsibility for three classes. Contact time with each class is six hours per week, a 70 minutes lesson per day, and support outside of lesson time is regarded as an essential supplement. The department also runs an Advanced English group, allowing students who are interested in humanities degrees in higher education to extend their experience, as well as Muse, a platform for the creative student voice, which includes a dedicated blog and podcast, interviews with past students, as well as occasional events and exhibitions.

Hurtwood House is one of England’s most exciting and successful schools, specialising exclusively in the Sixth Form. We have an impressive academic record, a reputation for preparing students successfully for higher education and are renowned for the quality of our pastoral care. A culture of high expectations, creativity and professionalism permeates the school and we encourage students and staff to work in partnership to achieve the academic and personal outcomes that are important to us.

Hurtwood House has its own generous salary scale and benefits – our staff are welcome to join students in the first class dining facilities for three meals a day and there is a staff wellbeing programme, comprising in-school sessions and membership of the local leisure centre and its facilities. There is also an Employee Assistance Programme in place for all staff. Many of our teachers become involved in managing boarding house life for accommodation or an additional allowance. We are a member of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

Closing date: Friday 24 February 2023

Interviews will take place: w/ 6 March 2023

Values and vision

Hurtwood House aims to be ‘the most exciting school in England’. It is driven by a passion for creativity and academic excellence. The school aims to combine the best elements of the traditional boarding school system with the best elements of the modern sixth form college to create what it believes is a wholly unique and individual establishment. While breaking new ground educationally, the school believes it has retained traditional values and has created an inspirational but safe stepping-stone between school and university.

The secondary school is driven by a passion for creativity and a respect for academic rigour. It is a small independent school with a distinctive voice, which is less formal and less institutional than traditional public schools.
