Job overview

The Trustees of NGHS are looking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic teacher of English to join our outstanding, high-achieving school. This post is to cover a maternity leave from 1 September. The contract is likely to end on the return of our colleague and could last until mid July 2024.

The post would suit an ECT or an experienced colleague. We always appoint the 'best fit' colleague regardless of their experience or payscale. All colleagues receive a thorough induction to the school and ECTs have additional non-contact time and support.

The post is full-time and the postholder will teach English to KS3 and GCSE. A-level English Literature teaching could be available for a suitably qualified/experienced candidate. An interest in teaching some Drama is desirable, but not essential.

We expect all staff to get involved in the wider life of the school, which includes a thriving House system and plenty of extra-curricular activities, trips and visits.

Newport Girls' High School was rated OUTSTANDING in every category last November and students regularly attain results which top the local league tables. The school was also awarded the title of 2020 Secondary School of the West Midlands.

All staff are highly valued at NGHS. We have a dedicated staff well-being programme and great camaraderie and support between colleagues and friends in the staff room. We offer extensive CPD opportunities and associate leader positions. The successful post-holder will join the Humanities faculty, who are all very welcoming, experienced and friendly colleagues.

Please refer to the Candidate Information Pack below for more details and feel free to contact the Headteacher, Michael Scott, for more information and/or the opportunity to visit the school via jobs@nghs.org.uk

Please apply either using the 'Apply Now' link below or via the more traditional method of downloading and completing an application form from our Recruitment webpage: https://www.nghs.org.uk/about-us/recruitment/

Thank you for your interest.

NGHS is committed to the equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion or belief. We particularly welcome applications from colleagues from under-represented backgrounds. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS, Barred List check and other recruitment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education Safer Recruitment practices. This includes sourcing police checks for any period of time spent abroad and online searches.

Newport Girls’ High School is a girls' grammar school located in the market town of Newport, Shropshire. With around 680 pupils aged 11-18, the school is a selective academy, with entrance examinations required of any prospective students.

In 2019, the School was successful in gaining £2.3m to expand further under the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund. An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.

The school’s sixth form is also open to students from other local schools. Newport Girls' High School converted to an academy in 2012 and operates under its own trust.

Ofsted report (November 2022)

"Leaders and teachers are highly ambitious for all pupils throughout the school, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They make sure that the most important knowledge and skills in each subject are taught in the most effective sequence."

"Pupils rapidly develop the exceptionally positive learning behaviours expected by leaders and teachers. There is no disruption of lessons."
