Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a full time Teacher of English who is able to teach across the Senior School (11-18 years) and who can prepare pupils for GCSE and A Level examinations in English Language (GCSE) and in English Literature (GCSE and A Level). The position is suitable either for a teacher who is in the early stages of their career (including recent graduates) or for someone with more experience who is seeking to develop in a new and stimulating environment.
The English faculty is creative, energetic and forward-thinking. Its 11 members benefit from close collaboration within a supportive community, rich CPD opportunities, and strong links with our school librarian. We offer a wide range of co-curricular activities, and the applicant will enjoy taking part in some of these, and even offering more ideas, as a means of developing their teaching and pastoral experience at the school: our popular clubs include creative writing, film making, performance, literary-themed baking and journalism (we supervise the annual production of our student magazine, The Wall, which has won many national awards).
Theatre trips, writing residentials, and visits from high-profile authors complement pupil learning, as do our National Poetry Day competition, our Poet Laureate award, and our innovative reading and writing competitions. 2023 will be the second time that our school has hosted the Trinity Schools Book Award: we take an active role in the promotion of reading and in the promotion of diversity and representation in literary study, reflected in our classrooms at every level.
All pupils study GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature (Eduqas). The number of pupils studying A Level English Literature (Edexcel) bucks the national trend; many of our pupils enjoy studying it alongside History, Psychology, Drama, and even Science, and regularly return to tell us how indispensable the A Level proved to be in their undergraduate study. Past pupils have gone on to read English both at Oxford and Cambridge.
This post will commence 31 August 2023
This is a term time only role, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm, with a six month probationary period.
