Job overview

Fixed Term Contract – eight-ten months

To commence May/June 2023

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated English (and Media ideally) Teacher with the ability and enthusiasm to deliver innovative and enjoyable lessons to students from Key Stage 3 to 5.

Our English and Media departments are strong, thriving departments staffed and lead by committed, collaborative and supportive team members. As a result, Media is a popular choice amongst our students at Key Stage 4 and 5 and English is a popular A-level choice. Examination results at all levels are well above national averages and are expected to continue on an upward trend. Find more information about the departments and latest exam results on page 7 and 8 of the application pack.

Hinchley Wood is an inclusive, high achieving and highly sought after school with 1,400 students on roll including 275 in our Sixth form. We are extremely proud of our students’ academic achievements, but we also celebrate student progress and development in all areas and we enjoy outstanding sporting and creative achievements.

In 2022 our Progress 8 score of +0.87 put us in the top 5% of schools nationally, and we are in the 200 top performing schools in England and Wales in terms of the progress our students make between the end of Key Stage 2 and their GCSEs.

You will teach across the age and ability range in this oversubscribed co-educational academy supporting students from 11-18 years. In return for your hard work, we offer exceptional support and training and the rewards that come with teaching students who really want to learn. We take staff and student well-being seriously and have invested time and money in ensuring that all members of our school feel supported and happy.

We offer:

  • A competitive salary (London Fringe Pay Scale/dependent upon experience).
  • Professional development support and an extensive CPD programme.
  • Two-week autumn half term.
  • Early close to students at 1.30 on Friday afternoon.
  • Generous employer pension contributions.
  • Cycle to work scheme and on-site gym.

In addition, for ECTs we offer:

  • The opportunity to commence employment in July 2023, or a paid induction in July.
  • A dedicated mentor with regular mentor meetings and coaching.
  • A comprehensive induction programme and a wide range of CPD opportunities.

Whilst we recognise it is a one-year contract, we will consider applications from Early Careers Teachers if you wish to apply.

Please contact us if you have any questions prior to applying or would like to visit the school. Contact the HR team on

Closing date for applications: 9am, Monday 6 February 2023.

We anticipate interviews will take place in the morning on Thursday 9 February.

We encourage early interest and reserve the right to close this role earlier.

Ofsted report

“The students work exceptionally well together in this harmonious and cohesive community and achieve outstanding outcomes. This is as a result of the good teaching they receive, excellent interventions for those who underachieve and a well-structured curriculum with some innovative aspects. Personalised vocational and academic pathways, resulting from the school’s strong partnerships, effectively meet students’ needs and aspirations. The outstanding specialist curriculum in music has had a significant impact on raising achievement. Additionally, excellent care, guidance and support and detailed tracking of students’ progress ensure that all students are on track to achieve their potential. All students feel highly valued and safe.”
