Job overview

As an 11–19 secondary school serving nearly 1,300 students in central Gateshead, we have a clear vision for excellence in character education, the examined curriculum and in service to our community, grounded in our strong Christian ethos. We are part of the Emmanuel Schools Foundation, which opens exceptional opportunities for knowledge sharing and career development. We have a clear model for school improvement to provide an outstanding education for all students and are relentless in the pursuit of this goal. You will be central to delivering our strategy, as you transform both the school and our students’ futures.

We truly believe that Grace College is a fantastic and exciting place to study as a student and work as a teacher. We are looking for a candidate who believes that Technology is an inspiring and creative subject to be taught with creativity, expert pedagogy and sustained rigour. This is a full- or part-time role (0.8 FTE – 1.0 FTE).

At Grace, we are proud of our Technology curriculum, which is underpinned by a commitment to supporting students to see how the processes of designing, making and evaluating are fundamental to all aspects of the subject. We do this by exploring a range of technological processes, including food preparation and cooking, resistant materials, electronics and graphic design, supporting our students to appreciate technology’s ability to transform our world. Our Technology team is committed to supporting our students to be innovative in their approach and to appreciate the value of the subject as a means to understand and shape their communities and beyond.

As a Teacher of Food Technology, you would join a department driven with purpose, cognisant of the need to ensure all students receive high-quality teaching. Alignment with the department’s vision and a commitment to collaboration are both essential to the effectiveness of working together as a team. All members of the department are valued and supported; strength of practice is celebrated as well as opportunities cultivated to furnish the development of the individual.

The Department

The Technology Department comprises a dedicated food and nutrition classroom supported by a smaller kitchen area, two well-equipped workshops and two computing suites, together with a purpose-built material preparation area. All networked computer suites offer access to a large range of technology software, including CAD/CAM and Commotion computer control equipment.

Individual rooms have a main focus on electronics, resistant materials and food and nutrition. There are five staff supported by one technician in the team.

The main focus within the Technology Department is to encourage and motivate all students to be creative and inventive when producing a range of mechanical, electronic, graphical or food-based outcomes. Students are encouraged at all times to appreciate the need for quality, accuracy and precision. Technology is taught to all students in the College from Years 7 to 9; a very large number of students then opt to study Technology, Construction and Food and Nutrition in Key Stage 4. Two periods per week are devoted to the subject in Key Stage 3, with three periods per week given to each Key Stage 4 group.

At Key Stage 4, students study:

  • GCSE Design and Technology: Design and Technology
  • GCSE Design and Technology: Food Preparation and Nutrition
  • BTEC Construction and the Built Environment

You will be expected to lead our provision for Food and Nutrition and play as full a part as possible in the other courses delivered by the team. New staff are also encouraged to play an active role in the department’s extra-curricular activities, including STEM and Homework Clubs.

Join us and you can expect to be nurtured, supported, and encouraged at every step of your career through the Emmanuel College Teaching School. We are committed to investing in you and your career development, with the possibility of working closely with colleagues at Emmanuel College, one-to-one coaching, and future opportunities to undertake educational research. In short, we are looking to develop exceptional teachers and school leaders of tomorrow – either here or across the Emmanuel Schools Foundation – so we can take your career anywhere you want to go as this is a school where everyone can shine.

Grace College is an 11-19 secondary school serving over 1200 students in central Gateshead. The school is committed to creating an outstanding learning community where students excel in their academic, cultural, co-curricular and personal lives. The College joined the Emmanuel Schools Foundation (ESF) in April 2019 as the fifth school providing a holistic education focused on developing character in and beyond the classroom.  ESF seeks to: provide and support schools in which students and staff have the opportunity to work hard to achieve their personal best; encourage personal, moral and spiritual development within a Christian framework and create and sustain educational environments where everyone is equally valued.

Our schools are committed to assisting economic regeneration and prosperity in the north-east, and to improve the quality of community life through our work with young people. We aspire to impart wisdom to the next generation by educating young men and women in a school culture which prioritises the pursuit of knowledge and the development of character. We serve communities of students, staff and parents who hold many different religious and ideological positions who unite around our core beliefs and core values, which are underpinned by our Christian ethos.

We value academic excellence, but we hold personal best to be of far greater importance. It is our experience that by developing a strong work ethic, holding a growth rather than fixed mind-set, and being provided with outstanding tuition, students may go on to achieve considerably more than they might have imagined possible. We seek to be intentional about character education, our aim being that our students will, in the future, become servant-hearted leaders. Students starting here encounter consistent rules, role models and traditions, which help them feel part of the college community and to begin to take responsibility for others. As students grow older we expect more of them and in the Sixth Form expect our students to take on at least one formal leadership role in the college as well as beginning to serve in the wider community.

Our hope is that all students leave the college as well-rounded, qualified individuals who are able to articulate a viewpoint and back it up with substantial knowledge and understanding. Students are encouraged to achieve academic excellence to access first-rate employment opportunities or to gain access to outstanding universities across the country.

Grace College provides opportunities for colleagues to collaborate and develop professionally with others across ESF. We are committed to an extensive, high quality programme of professional development and to opportunities for career progression. Working within ESF provides an ideal opportunity for ambitious educators who aspire to future senior leadership and will benefit from input through our National Teaching School designation.
