Job overview

We seek to appoint a first-rate Teacher of French on a temporary basis from April 2020 or earlier for at least one term. 

The Modern Languages Department at Uppingham consists of thirteen modern language teachers working in a highly collegiate faculty, supported by four permanent language assistants. The department runs a regular programme of study visits and trips, frequent extracurricular activities and has excellent resources including a purpose-built Language Centre.

The successful applicant will be a strong, dynamic character with excellent subject knowledge and a good degree, good classroom management skills, a track record of excellent teaching and the ability to build an appropriate rapport with pupils. 

Applicants who are also able to teach Spanish may be able to offer both languages, but ideally we seek candidates who are able to teach French to at least Lower Sixth level. 

This role is available on a part time basis and the amount of teaching required will vary according to the number of languages offered. Applicants who wish to play a fuller role in the co-curricular and pastoral life of this seven-day week boarding school are also welcome to apply.

Uppingham School is a mixed, Church of England independent secondary school with sixth form and boarding, located in Leicestershire. The secondary school, situated in Uppingham has approximately 791 students on record.

Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons.
