We currently have 2 vacancies available at Surbiton  High School ( 1 maternity cover / 1 permanent.) We need to fill teaching gaps across our Preparatory and Senior Schools and will design the timetables around the successful applicant’s background, expertise and interests.Candidates do not need to submit more than one application but must specify within their personal statement which Key Stages they have the ability to teach at and/or any preferences they have. 


Reporting Line: Head of French & Head of MFL 

Tenure: Maternity cover / Permanent, full-time or part-time (1 role is permanent, 1 maternity cover)


Key Responsibilities:

  • To possess and maintain a deep and secure knowledge of your subject and the pedagogy associated with its teaching
  • To create a challenging and stimulating classroom climate that will motivate pupils to learn, think independently, take risks, empathise with others, and perform to the best of their abilities
  • To monitor progress against prior attainment and employ effective intervention strategies when required
  • To undertake high quality preparation, marking and report writing, in line with School policy, so that pupils achieve the highest possible standards
  • To be prepared to take on the role of Form Tutor, which will encompass academic, pastoral and administrative responsibilities. Tutors have oversight of their tutees’ general well-being and academic progress, and they are the first point of contact for parents. ·
  • To conduct yourself in an appropriate professional manner at all times, supporting and fostering the aims and safeguarding policies of the School.
  • To contribute to the organisation and running of co-curricular and enrichment activities.
  • To be an active participant in CPD training opportunities, sharing best practice with colleagues, as requested.
  • The ability to teach Spanish is desirable
  • The department teach from Year 1 through to Year 13 so an ability to teach at least 3 key stages within this range is desirable


The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • Good Honours degree
  • A postgraduate teaching qualification including QTS, would be an advantage
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development
  • Ability to deliver inspiring lessons at KS2, KS3, GCSE and A-level in French (with the ability to Spanish would advantageous)
  • The ability to inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues in a successful and dynamic school
  • A proven track record of delivering on academic performance
  • Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels
  • Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity and an ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality 
  • Personal warmth to gain the confidence of pupils, staff and parents
  • Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
  • Positive, enthusiastic and energetic approach to life
  • Committed to Surbiton High School’s ethos and strategic vision

Surbiton High School has approximately 1600 pupils aged between 4 and 18. Our Preparatory Schools are divided into the Girls’ Preparatory School and Boys’ Preparatory School, and the Senior School is girls only from age 11 upwards.
