Job overview

Talbot Heath is an independent girls’ school for ages 3-18 set in pleasant grounds in Bournemouth, with an outstanding academic record. We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and inspirational teacher of Geography from September 2023, part-time at 0.5.

The Geography Department is small but highly successful and energetic, consisting of 3 members of staff, specialist teaching rooms, as well as the facility of a central resource area. Each teaching room is fully equipped with an interactive whiteboard or Promethean screen and every pupils has an iPad.

Geography is one of the subjects in a vibrant Humanities Faculty at Talbot Heath School.

The KS3 Geography course gives pupils a broad understanding of both physical and human aspects of the subject, as well as developing geographical skills. Our intention is to grow and develop an appreciation of their place in the world and an understanding of their role and responsibility within the global society.

Pupils begin their study of Geography in Year 7 (U3) by exploring their connection to the world with globalisation and Africa units as well as developing a sense of place through basic map skills about ‘Our UK home’. They then go on to study river processes and landforms before looking at local tourism and its impacts on National Parks like the New Forest. U3 also have the opportunity to visit a local river and a practicing New Forest farm in the Summer term.

In Year 8 (L4), pupils are introduced to the concept of the Development Gap, through the topic ‘who wants to be a billionaire’. They then go on to study wild weather followed by Brazil and its rainforest. L4 visit the Living Rainforest to investigate rainforest adaptations.

In Year 9 (U4), pupils begin the year with plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes and a series of ‘Extreme Regions’ including Japan, the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and Antarctica. Pupils complete their KS3 Geography with an overview of the pressures on our planet to include an enquiry into the causes and effects of climate change, with a particular focus on food management. Their fieldwork is a coastal fieldwork trip to the Jurassic coast using GIS skills.

Exam results count, but just as important are resilience, self-esteem, character, those life skills that are acquired as a result of a nurturing environment and an holistic approach to education.

It is during their formative years that young people develop the attitudes and values that they will hold for the rest of their lives. It is essential that they feel supported and nurtured in their learning environment.

At Talbot Heath the pupils flourish, not only academically but in every area, be it music, sport or the performing arts. Small classes, individual attention and the ability to tailor the provision to the needs of each student, ensure that pupils achieve their very best.

As the only Independent Girls’ School within the Bournemouth and wider Dorset area, Talbot Heath is unique. We are proud of our distinctive character and believe that we have stayed true to Mary Broad’s vision of first class education for girls with a modern twist.
