Job overview

We are seeking to appoint, from September 2022, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic Teacher of Geography.  The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher, passionate about their subject, and must be willing to contribute to the wider life of the school.

Every year we advertise several additional responsibilities internally to our teaching staff and it is likely that ahead of September 2022 there will be the opportunity to apply for middle leadership responsibilities in either the pastoral or the extra-curricular life of the school for teachers of any subject specialism.  Experienced colleagues who feel they have relevant experience or are ready for the next challenge should make this clear in their supporting statement.  However, this teaching vacancy is equally suitable for Early Career Teachers who will be fully supported by a comprehensive induction programme.

The Faculty

The Humanities Faculty at Bury Grammar School is a thriving team of thirteen members of staff, comprising the Geography, History and Politics and Religious Studies departments.  We are committed to enabling our students to benefit from the highest standards of teaching and are proud of our faculty culture of collaboration and shared enterprise to facilitate this.  We provide a wide range of opportunities within the faculty to encourage our students to maximise their potential and promote a sense of challenge and curiosity within an inspirational and supportive environment; we are proud of our role in fostering the development of informed, resilient, global citizens.

 The Department

Geography is a successful and thriving department at Bury Grammar School.  We hold a strong reputation for outstanding results and enrichment opportunities on offer to our pupils. Geography is taught to all pupils at KS3.  Our bespoke programme of study provides a grounding in core principles of both Human and Physical Geography; topics include Oceans on the Edge, Population Issues, Wild Weather, and Tectonic Hazards.  Geography is a hugely popular option subject at KS4 where we follow the AQA Geography specification.  At KS5, our sixth-form students follow AQA A-Level Geography and a large proportion of our students opt to pursue Geography at university.  In recent years, several students have gained places at Oxbridge.

Fieldwork is integral to all of our courses, with every student who studies Geography participating in fieldwork opportunities.  These include an investigation into the impacts of tourism in the Peak District, a river study along the River Bollin, a study of the changing nature of Scarborough and a carbon study within contrasting woodland and grassland environments.  We also offer the chance to participate in optional ‘awe and wonder’ expeditions; most recently we have visited Italy and Iceland. Contributing to BGS’ diverse enrichment programme, there is a GeoClub for curious young geographers and we run Geography at the Movies, investigating the level of fact and fiction in geography themed films.  We have also launched our Geographical Society, encouraging A-level geographers to attend the GA lecture programme at Manchester University and to broaden their geographical horizons beyond the specification through scholarship, debate and challenge.

About Bury Grammar School

Bury Grammar School is situated in the heart of Bury, Lancashire and is widely recognised as one of the top independent schools in the North West of England. Currently there are over 1270 girls and boys on roll.

Our School is a family of independent, selective, day schools for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, which combine a strong tradition of academic excellence with the best in modern educational practice. The School has a long and rich history of excellence extending back 450 years and our staff, pupils and alumni are proud of the School’s long-standing traditions. Our modern, inclusive School community welcomes students and staff from different faiths and cultures. It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Through our unique blend of single-sex education from ages 7-16 and co-education in our Pre-School, Infant School and Sixth Form, we offer the ‘best of both worlds’ for our pupils at every stage of their educational journey. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

One of our key strategic objectives is to maintain, recruit, nurture and develop first class teaching and support staff. You can be sure that as an employer we are focused on creating an outstanding workplace for all our staff so that we can attract, retain and engage talented individuals who have a desire to transform the lives of others.

A successful education is very much about team work and every member of staff at Bury Grammar School recognises that together we have the opportunity to change our pupils’ lives. Whether this is part of our fantastic catering team who provide our pupils with nutritious meals, our dedicated estates team who maintain our beautiful grounds or as a member of our inspiring teaching staff, everyone has an important part to play.
