The Geography, Law, Economics and Sociology Department currently offers Eduqas (WJEC) Geography at Advanced Level. Student success rates in examinations and recruitment onto courses is very good. At present there are approximately 140 students following day-time A-level Geography courses.

Staff are highly qualified and extremely supportive both of each other and of their students. The team work closely together to plan schemes of work, develop resources and share good practice and the department is well-equipped with up-to-date materials. New staff will always be given every assistance with books, resources and any other help they may need.

The department is well resourced with large dedicated teaching rooms located in a newly refurbished building. The Department has access to rooms with suites of networked computers and laptop trolleys and all Geography classrooms have data-projectors. The department has recently acquired an augmented reality sand box for use in the classroom.

Our priorities are to maintain and extend our examination success and to maintain high levels of student retention. We seek to ensure that we provide students with an experience of learning that is as attractive, interesting and active as possible. Innovation in teaching approaches is very much welcomed and supported. Student engagement is supplemented by regular field trips to places such as the West Sussex coast.

We aim to create constructive and supportive relationships with our students and it is the tradition at Queen Mary’s for staff and students to be on first name terms.

Queen Mary’s College is a large progressive and successful sixth form college, conveniently situated close to the centre of Basingstoke in thirty acres of parkland and playing fields.  The College has excellent facilities, including the Central Studio (a professional theatre), and a purpose built sports centre for students, staff and local residents, including a swimming pool and two floodlit artificial sports pitches . The site also boasts a state of the art specialist Art and IT building and in January this year a new £12.8 million, three-storey facility was opened designed to accommodate Science, Humanities, Sport and students with learning difficulties and disabilities .  Queen Mary’s College is continuing to enhance all aspects of estates and facilities. Teaching and Learning outcomes at the College are excellent. Staff and students enjoy working and studying here and being in the vanguard of educational development in a fast changing 14-19 environment.
