Job overview

Required from September 2023: We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified graduate to teach Geography at all levels, up to and including A Level, at this 11-18 boys' selective school, with a co-educational Sixth Form. A large number of our students opt to continue their study of Geography at GCSE and A Level. We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed teacher to be part of our hard-working and successful team. The post is open to experienced teachers, as well as ECTs.

Oakwood Park Grammar School is a Boys’ Selective Grammar School which is co-educational in the 6th Form; we have 49 girls in a 6th Form of 311. The NOR of the school is currently 1095. Entry at Year 7 is by the Kent Tests; competitive entry exams in Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. This means that we are educating pupils in the top 25% ability range in the county.

The school was last inspected in February 2019. We were graded “Good” overall with outstanding grades for Behaviour and Welfare and for our 6th Form Provision.

There is a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities with a strong sporting tradition (football, rugby and cricket), Drama (an annual production), Music (regular concerts) and high standards in Art, Graphics and Design Technology with students’ work readily on display for all to see. We also have a successful Duke of Edinburgh programme with on average 60-70 students in Year 11 completing their Bronze award and an increasing number achieving Silver in the 6th Form.

The curriculum is a traditional grammar school one. The EBACC is compulsory at Key Stage 4, which has recently returned to a two-year programme of study. The creative subjects are, however, well represented (by Art, Music, Drama, PE and DT) with Psychology and Media Studies also available. All pupils take a full course in Religious Studies, something we are very proud of.

In the 6th Form, typically all students take three A Levels, though a number who choose to study Further Mathematics may take four. The Extended Project qualification is also available and 60-70 students successfully complete this each year with outstanding results. We are very proud of our 6th Form. Our students are delightful, mature and thoughtful young people who make a substantial contribution to the school and local community through charitable fundraising and volunteering.

Please send your application form and a covering letter to the Headteacher by 12.00 noon on the closing date of Monday 5th June.

Oakwood Park Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with former employers and Enhanced DBS check.

About Oakwood Park Grammar School

Oakwood Park Grammar School is a five-form entry (usually 160 in each year) Boys’ Grammar School of approximately 1100 students, including the Sixth Form.  We have a co-educational Sixth Form with a pan of 180 in each year group. Entry at 11 to the school is through the Kent Test (11+) where students sit three papers in Mathematics, English and Reasoning.

We have been on the site since 1959 and we share an attractive campus with two schools (St Augustine Academy and St Simon Stock) and a college of Further Education (Mid-Kent College). We remain committed to improving school facilities and providing high quality learning environments for our students. Our teaching and support staff are dedicated and hardworking and very loyal to the school.

Oakwood Park Grammar School has a wealth of extra-curricular activities for its students.  Sport is very strong with national success in football, alongside rugby, cricket, basketball and athletics.  We also cater for rowing, fencing, table tennis and climbing. Music and Drama are also popular with an annual production and brand new facilities which opened in October 2023. Other extra-curricular opportunities include robotics, debating and chess.

Academic standards are high at both GCSE and A Level.  In the Sixth Form, on average, well over half of our students who apply to universities will secure offers from prestigious Russell Group universities and we regularly send students to Oxbridge colleges.

In 2024, an ungraded inspection made clear the school continues to be ‘Good’ overall by Ofsted. However, our grading of Outstanding for our Behaviour and our Sixth Form provision remains.

We are a welcoming, open school with a clear focus on developing staff, with teaching and learning at the heart of our professional development.
