The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, inspirational and well-qualified teacher of geography to join our successful department from September 2018. This could be on a full time or part time basis by negotiation to suit the successful candidate. 

The geography department was referred to as a beacon department by HMI. This position has been achieved by consistently deploying a variety of exciting, varied and often experimental teaching styles so that our pupils feel involved, stretched and inspired.   

Geography is taken by all pupils up to Year 9. At GCSE it is an options subject and numbers are high.. currently there are close to 140 pupils in each GCSE year. In the sixth form there are currently 6 A level sets, with about 50 pupils in each year group. Academic results are excellent. The pass rates for GCSE over five years is 100% and last year over 80% passed at grade A* or A. At Advanced Level the pass rate over the same period has been 100% and last year 75% achieved grade A or B. In recent years the numbers of pupils going on to study geography related degrees has flourished, including success at Oxbridge entry.  

Curricular field work is a vital part of our activities and is all departmentally run. Pupils in KS3 experience a range of trips to establish and develop their questioning approach towards field work. At GCSE there are two field trips to contrasting environments. In the A2 year we carry out a residential field course which in recent years has been based in Switzerland.  

If successful, you will be joining a strong cohesive team of committed enthusiasts. You will have  strong classroom management skills and will be expected to play a full part in this busy department.

In addition to formal interviews there will also be an opportunity for short-listed candidates to see around the school and meet members of the department. The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) is one of the leading schools in the north and traces its history back to 1552. In the last five years GSAL has twice been named North Independent Secondary School of the Year, and North Independent Secondary School of the Decade in the Sunday Times Parent Power League Table. Our history began with the foundation of Leeds Grammar School for boys in 1552. GSAL was created in 2008 following the merger of the boys’ school with Leeds Girls’ High School, founded in 1876.

GSAL provides a high quality independent education for 2,100 pupils between the ages of three and 18. The purpose built campus at Alwoodley Gates in north Leeds has excellent facilities, including the newly refurbished Lawson Library which is the oldest library in Leeds, housing over 60 000 books and, from September 2024, GSAL will be home to a state of the art performing arts centre.

GSAL is academically selective, with consistently excellent A-level and GCSE results. After merger, the school introduced the diamond model of teaching, through which pupils learn together up to age 11, then in single sex classes between Year 7 and Year 11, and come together again in sixth form lessons. Form time and extracurricular activities are mixed throughout. Class sizes are usually between 16 and 22.

Academic achievement is at the heart of a rounded education at GSAL, which offers our students personal development opportunities and broad experience beyond the classroom. We pride ourselves on a rich co-curricular programme encompassing sport, music, drama, scouts, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, debating and much more.
