Teacher of Geography

Oundle SchoolNorthamptonshire

To start September 2021, with an induction in the last week of August, we are seeking an exceptional Teacher of Geography to develop and inspire our pupils, and who is able to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole.  In return the School is committed to helping you develop further as a teacher by supporting you with appropriate professional development.

This is a one-year fixed-term position, teaching up to a 50% timetable.

Geography is housed at the heart of the academic life of the School in the Cloisters. Currently with seven Geography teachers working collaboratively. We study the Edexcel IGCSE and the OCR A-Level, both of which involve a valued coursework component.

Geography is taught as a compulsory subject to all pupils in the First, Second and Third Forms. The Junior years are taught Geographical concepts through place studies. For instance, in the ‘Antarctica and the Arctic’ unit they learn about latitude, climate, biomes, tourism, geopolitics and global warming.

There is also a healthy level of extra-curricular Geography activities, with an active Geography Society hosting visiting speakers and a Sixth Form Forum allowing interested pupils to experience the subject beyond the confines of the curriculum. A variety of fieldwork is undertaken in support of the taught curriculum over the course of the year, including a residential field trip for the Upper Sixth to Epping Forest and the Isle of Dogs and international trips have included Bulgaria, Iceland and Costa Rica in recent years.

We are fortunate in our location at the heart of a beautiful market town: School and town are part of the same community and our pupils take their place within this community, not isolated from it. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre.  The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.

For those moving into the area, accommodation may be available at a discounted rate.  Other benefits include a salary on the generous Oundle pay scale.
