Job overview

Geography department at St Bede’s

We have a vacancy for a full-time teacher of geography to join us from September 2023.

Please note, applications will be considered upon receipt and as such, this vacancy may close earlier than the deadline stated. Early applications are encouraged.

Geography at St Bede’s is lively and vibrant with a strong take-up in Key Stages 4 and 5. Teaching in Key Stage 3 is undertaken in mixed ability tutor groups and the subject is allocated 3 hours in the 2 week timetable. Assessment is undertaken through a mixture of formative and summative assessments. A shared drive contains suggested lessons for the Key Stage 3 course.

At Key Stage 4 teaching is again undertaken in mixed ability groups. The GCSE syllabus chosen is Edexcel B as this was felt to provide a good foundation in geography for the students. The subject is popular at this level, evidenced by the high take-up with 147 students in Year 11 and 177 in Year 10 this year with 198 Year 9 students signed up for next year. Field-trips have always been an important central focus of teaching and learning in the department and this year include a GCSE field trip to South Wales.

At Key Stage 5 the department presently teaches the Edexcel syllabus. This syllabus is modern and linked to the full range of global issues and challenges facing the world today. There are 33 and 23 students in Years 12 and 13 respectively this year. Presently, the field-trips for this course include A Level trips to Dorset and an optional visit to The Azores at Easter.

The geography department has five full-time members of staff. It is based in five dedicated rooms, two of which are in a purpose-built block and the other three, close by, have been refurbished. There is a department office for all departmental staff and three stock rooms. Each teaching room is linked to both the internet and school network, as well as having the use of a projector.

Increasing use is being made of the school online portal to place resources accessible to students. Our focus in this has been on the new A Level syllabuses and Year 11 revision sheets. The department also supports cross curricular activities in the school, for instance taking part in the Year 8 electives, ‘Hidden Geography’ and ‘Cities of the Future’.

Why work for us?

  • St Bede's is a good place to work. Staff are friendly and supportive of one another: relationships between staff and pupils were recognised by Ofsted as 'exceptionally strong'.
  • ECTs benefit from a well developed and comprehensive induction period programme. More experienced teachers are given the opportunity to participate in training which will help them to develop skills needed for middle and senior management roles.
  • There are good on-site catering facilities. Staff are able to use the fitness facilities free of charge and to participate in sports activities.
  • Music is a big part of school life and staff are welcome to join our senior choir and instrumental groups.
  • We have a social event at the end of each term as well as occasional staff trips to the theatre.
  • The school is situated in Redhill, a commuter belt town in the Surrey Fringe area. We are close to the M25 and there are good transport links to London and the South Coast from Redhill station which is about 15 minutes walk from the school. We also benefit from being within walking distance of beautiful countryside . Many staff live locally, others commute from Guildford, South London, Kent and East & West Sussex.

In March 2023 Ofsted carried out an inspection of St Bede’s and judged the school outstanding.

St Bede’s is a good place to work. The community is vibrant, focused on learning and caring for our students. Staff relationships are very strong, supportive and welcoming.  Our students like the school and behaviour is outstanding. We have approximately 1900 mixed ability students aged 11-18.  This includes over 300 studying academic courses in the sixth form. Our GCSE exam results make us one of the highest performing non-selective state schools in the country reflecting the very effective three way partnership we enjoy; hardworking pupils, committed staff and supportive parents.

We welcome applications from ECTs and more experienced teachers. Whatever your level of experience, and regardless of whether you are a teacher or member of support staff, this is a school where you will have opportunity to develop.  Teachers in their ECT years benefit from an excellent level of support through mentoring and a full ECT programme.

St Bede’s is unique.  This is the only state-funded school where Anglicans, Roman Catholic and the Free Churches are bound together in a formal partnership to provide a common Christian education, which values the distinctive contribution of each tradition.  St Bede’s is a charitable trust jointly held by the Anglican Diocese of Southwark and the RC Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.  Staff can be of any religion, or none at all, but must be able to support the ethos of the school.

Our facilities are very good; staff have free access to fitness facilities and there is very good on-site catering.  Teaching and support staff have opportunities to be involved in a very wide range of activities and visits.  We are situated in Redhill Surrey with good transport links to both London and the south coast.  We are very close to beautiful countryside.  This area offers the best of all worlds!

Our school is committed to the safeguarding of children so all appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. Only applications made on our School Application form will be considered; we do not accept CVs or unsolicited testimonials.  It is our policy always to request references prior to interview.
