Job overview

Teacher of German and French (part-time)

Required from September 2024

Do you enjoy teaching languages up to A Level? We have an excellent opportunity for a passionate and inspirational teacher to join Ashford School’s thriving Faculty of Modern Languages.

As a well-qualified and committed classroom practitioner, you will be expected to contribute to the teaching of German and French, as well as promote the enjoyment of language learning from Year 7. The ability to teach both languages at A Level is preferable.

The Faculty has developed a particularly collaborative and supportive atmosphere where resources are shared, yet teachers are encouraged to be creative and adaptive with their materials and methods, and teaching autonomy is respected.

Reporting to the Heads of German and French, the postholder will be expected to build on the Faculty’s successful approach to language learning. Lessons take place in a dedicated Faculty building where there is a Language Lab for use by both Language Assistants and Teachers. Lessons are dynamic and lively, and the postholder would be expected to show confidence in teaching the four principal skills required in a language classroom: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

In Year 7, all students are exposed to three languages (French, German and Spanish) in a carousel. By the end of the third half term, the students select their two preferred languages which they continue to learn for the rest of Key Stage 3. The AQA specifications are taught at both GCSE and A Level.

Responding to the needs of the individual student – be it preparing for examinations in booster classes or guiding the most able through the Oxbridge process – is at the heart of the Faculty’s ethos. The candidate for this position will be able to articulate what academic rigour looks like within their subjects. Furthermore, the successful candidate will show an interest in the School’s Strategic Priorities and Curriculum Philosophy.

The Languages Faculty organises visits to the University of Kent, plays in London and in other schools in the target language. Candidates should be willing to contribute to the German co-curricular programme.

Teachers at Ashford School enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff. All teaching staff and pupils in Years 7-11 have their own Surface Pro device.

Continuing professional development opportunities are offered to staff during the academic year.

Teachers act as form tutors and a single person accommodation may be available in return for boarding duties.

The part-time allocation for this role is approximately 0.8.

Note - We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.

Closing date: 12 noon 10th April 2024

Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate. Applications are welcomed from ECTs or experienced teachers.

About Ashford School

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational independent day and boarding school, founded in 1898.  Ashford has all the benefits of being a school of individual character, coupled with the security and support offered by membership of the United Learning group of independent schools and academies. We are proud that the School is able to provide a seamless learning journey for children from 3 months to 18 years on a beautiful campus in the heart of Kent.

Ashford School, East Hill:

Our Senior School and Bridge Nursery make up Ashford School’s beautiful 25-acre campus close to the centre of Ashford and surrounded by Kent countryside.

The Senior School occupies a site in a prominent position in the busy and growing commuter town of Ashford and is close to the International Station. It has on-site playing fields, floodlit Astroturf pitch, tennis and netball courts, as well as a recently opened Sports Centre complete with gyms, fitness suite and an indoor swimming pool.  The school’s boarding houses are on campus.  Further playing fields and sports facilities, including a second floodlit Astroturf pitch, can be found on a 40-acre site adjacent to the Prep School and are well used by both Senior and Prep students.

Ashford School, Great Chart:

Ashford Prep School is situated in the beautiful village of Great Chart on the outskirts of Ashford.  The site also includes our Prep School Nursery and in 2018 our custom-designed Stables Nursery opened.  The site includes beautiful playing fields, an indoor swimming pool, flood-lit Astroturf pitch, indoor gym and a well-appointed Sports Pavilion.

The early years provision has its own dedicated and well-resourced accommodation and staff.

Our students

Currently, approximately 500 students attend the Senior School (aged 11 to 18), including around 120 boarders. It is expected that the number of Senior School students will increase over the next ten years and developments are being planned to allow for this growth. Around 500 students also currently attend the Prep School and Nurseries (aged 0-11).

Our location

Ashford is extremely well connected. London St Pancras can be reached by train in 37 minutes thanks to Ashford International Station’s position on the High Speed Line (HS1). The Eurotunnel is a 15-minute drive away, and the Port of Dover can be reached in 30 minutes.
