We are seeking to appoint a talented teacher of Graphics and Art with the relevant knowledge and expertise to teach Graphics upto Key Stage four with a potential to teach Graphics A Level for a suitable candidate.

The role is offered as a full time role for one year in the first place, to commence in September 2024. This would be a fantastic opportunity for a talented teacher to develop their skills. Further details of the post are outlined in this information pack.

CURRICULUM

Students rotate around 4 subject areas in Design Technology at KS3. Design Technology is optional at KS4; students often work in mixed ability groups at this Level. We fervently believe in offering as wide a creative experience as possible throughout KS3 so that students are able to make informed choices when opting to study at GCSE. Students have the chance to opt to study Design Technology subjects at the end of year 8 to access a year 9 curriculum which prepares students for the expectations of GCSE within these subject areas. 

KS3 - students follow the national curriculum and rotate around Product Design, Textiles, Food and Graphics

KS4 - students can opt to pick the following GCSE subjects: NCFE Level 1/2 in Graphic Design, NCFE Level 1/2 in Creative Design & Production, EDUQAS GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition, AQA GCSE Art & Design: Textile Design

KS5 - students can opt to study A Level Art & Design: Graphic Communication

Schemes of work are collaboratively planned and evaluated. Considerable work has been undertaken over the last year to develop schemes to ensure that students are given the opportunity to acquire skills necessary to succeed and make excellent progress. Detailed formative and summative assessment is in place and there are regular supported meetings within the department to analyse data and identify areas for improved teaching and learning.

ACCOMMODATION

The accommodation consists of four specialist rooms for Product Design, Graphics, Textiles & Food Technology and one specialist workshop which are all located on the same floor. The rooms are bright and well-resourced with fixed projectors in each classroom. The Graphics room is equipped with computer facilities with Adobe software installed. The department has two part time technicians who assist with preparation for practical lessons.

In line with the Academy Development Plan the key objectives for Design Technology this year are:

  • GCSE outcomes across all DT subjects
  • Development of KS4 curriculum

The successful candidate will be someone with enthusiasm, initiative and very good subject knowledge. S/he will demonstrate a clear commitment to promoting the highest possible standards of achievement and developing excellent relationships with staff and students across the full age and ability range at St. Mary's. The person appointed will have a professional and personal profile that most closely matches the specification given below:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Qualified teacher status at graduate level.
  • Graphics/Art Degree.
  • Recent professional development/teaching placement relevant to the post.


EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and APTITUDE

  • A clear philosophy for the teaching of Graphics.
  • Knowledge of some strategies that will enhance learning and raise the attainment of all students in Graphics.
  • Ability to use Graphics to transform learning.
  • Effective communicator – verbally and in writing.


PERSONAL QUALITIES

  • Ability to form good relationships with both colleagues and students.
  • Commitment to actively supporting the distinctive ethos of the school.
  • Commitment to assisting with the development of extra-curricular activities.
  • Resilience, commitment, ability to work under pressure and a sense of humour.
  • An excellent attendance and punctuality record. (Please note that excellent attendance is considered to be 95% attendance over the past two academic years. Governors will take note of one-off illnesses/absences and individual circumstances).

  • Enthusiasm for career development.

The standard full-time contact time for teachers is 33 out of 40 periods per fortnight (31 for ECT Y1), including a period of PSHE with your form.
