Job overview

Teacher of Guitar and Bass

Required for September 2021

12 hours per week (2 day equivalent)

£30 per hour

This is a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional guitar and bass teacher to join a dynamic team. Lister is a successful community comprehensive, with specialisms in Science and Music, and provides a broad and rich curriculum for all its students. The school is part of the Newham Community Schools Trust (NCST) with three other secondary schools within the area. The music department also benefits from a formal arrangement between five of its feeder primaries, enabled by Newham Council's enrichment programme, working closely with each school to develop their music offers as part of our Primary Cluster.

The successful candidate will join a very strong team of six core Music teachers and ten peripatetic teachers. The available hours are for two full school days and includes time for individual or paired guitar or bass lessons, and rock band rehearsals.

In the last seven years Lister has made a huge commitment to Music education, and provides every student in Years 7 and 8 with free small group instrumental tuition during their curriculum lessons.  Following the creation of a non-teaching Director of Community Music post, our students also benefit from an exceptional range of partnerships and collaborative work with organisations such as the Music in Secondary Schools Trust (MiSST), Newham Music Hub, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Southbank Centre, Newham Council and others.

The Music team is ambitious for the students, staff and local community. We are committed to continuing to develop high quality music education with high levels of participation in extra-curricular activities. Our community opera ‘Full Circle’, run in partnership with Newham Music, brought together local young people and residents to write, compose and perform an original piece of work. The project was nationally recognised when it won the ’Outstanding Musical Initiative’ award at the Music Teacher Awards in March 2019. This work then culminated in a large-scale borough-wide project which saw over 700 performers take to the stage as the massed ensemble item at the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2019. This fantastic achievement of our students was a huge success and they rightly gained national media attention due to the performance at the event.

In December 2018 Ofsted inspectors found that the school has maintained the good quality of education and  ‘made strong progress in many aspects of the school’s provision‘ since our last inspection in September 2013. Our many strengths are highlighted, including how students are ‘courteous and articulate’ and ‘say they enjoy school and value the wide range of opportunities they are given’. We are very proud that the report recognises our high aspirations, the hard work and good behaviour of our students, and the dedication and commitment of our staff. In addition, our ‘impressive music provision’ was given as an example of how the school is ‘relentless in pursuing improvement’ and helps place the school at the centre of our local community.

We are actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated musician and teacher who will work with our talented and motivated team to ensure that the Music education at Lister is genuinely world-class. Excellent instrumental skills are essential; so too are the commitment, subject knowledge and high expectations which will lead to students achieving top grades in this subject. An interest in Music Technology, an ability to use recording software and a willingness to help with recording student performances is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will need to have knowledge and experience of running bands, and be prepared to lead rehearsals on a weekly basis.

If you think you have the potential to become an outstanding teacher of Music at Lister and bring a different dimension to our dynamic team, please send a letter of application and an up to date CV to jobs@lister.newham.sch.uk  Applications must be received by Midday on Friday 2nd July 2021.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment and enhanced DBS checks.
