Job overview

What we seek:

The English College in Prague is looking to appoint a Teacher of History who is also capable and confident in teaching English Literature. We are flexible regarding the exact qualification and experience of the applicant, but are looking for someone who would enjoy teaching both subjects throughout the school.

The successful candidate will have experience of working in an academically aspirational school or the desire to do so. Ideally, they will have knowledge of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Previous IB teaching experience is preferable but not essential as all the necessary IB training will be provided. Experience shows us that a flexible and resourceful A-Level teacher will be able to deliver the IB syllabus effectively. Structured and well-resourced schemes of work are in place for all of our courses, and the successful candidate will receive support from our experienced Heads of Faculty, but we also encourage input and innovation from all members of staff as they deliver their lessons. For example, in September the school is launching its own Pre-IB (KS4) Programme in Humanities to replace IGCSEs and therefore an interest in innovative and bespoke curriculum development would be a big advantage. Very importantly, the successful candidate will be interested in in-school pedagogical development through cross-curricular Teaching & Learning Groups - timetabled periods in the working day where colleagues meet to plan and engage in classroom-based pedagogical research and/or activities.

The right candidate will be joining a diverse and dedicated team who maintain a dynamic learning and extra-curricular environment in which the needs and talents of the individual student are recognised and nurtured.

Short School Statement

We are an unusual, exciting and academic HMC secondary school educating both Czech and international students that is committed to fostering good relationships. While we prepare our students for a small number of core IGCSEs, and Common European Framework language exams, our main focus is on delivering success in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Czech Maturita qualification. Each year, our graduates go on to study at universities in the UK (usually including Oxbridge), continental Europe and occasionally, Asia and North America. We offer the successful candidate adventure, challenge, permanent contracts and good remuneration in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. For further information including a description of living and working in the Czech Republic, please visit the English College in Prague website via this link.

Person Specification:

We are looking for someone with:

  • A genuine understanding of the importance of establishing and maintaining good relationships for effective learning and academic leadership.
  • A creative approach to teaching History and English, combining engagement with academic rigour and an understanding of the importance of student-centred and investigative work.
  • A passion for educating, inspiring and understanding children and a belief that every child can succeed beyond her/his expectations.
  • A commitment to professionalism and the desire to be part of an HMC school with a prestigious history and an important role to play in providing all students with an internationally-minded liberal education.
  • A love of learning and a commitment to continuing to learn, through classroom-based research, collaboration and peer observation.
  • A desire to participate holistically in the life of a busy and socially ambitious school, through pastoral support and co-curricular activities (such as supporting school clubs or student charity work).
  • The flexibility and sense of humour required to work abroad, with both the great benefits and minor challenges that it presents.
  • A particular interest in getting to know Prague and the Czech Republic, its people, its culture and language.

Job Specification Overview:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience of teaching History up to Key Stage 5 (including A-level or IB).
  • Have experience (or confidence in) teaching English Literature to Key Stage 4 and ideally other Humanities at Key Stage 3 or 4.
  • Have a degree directly relevant to History.
  • Have experience of (or confidence in) teaching students who have English as a second language.
  • Be happiest when working proactively within teams, exchanging ideas and sharing resources, but also able to infuse their teaching with their own personality and style.
  • Participate in relevant IB training and internally-arranged professional development, including contributing to training sessions where appropriate.
  • Have already obtained Qualified Teacher Status (or other EU equivalent).

The English College in Prague is a unique and special school. It was founded in 1994 in the wake of the Velvet Revolution as a moderately selective independent day school, offering a British-style Grammar School education and holistic pastoral support to students aged 13-19 (Years 8 - 13 in UK terms). Although all non-language lessons are taught in English it is also a part of the Czech school system. The College is a prominent member of HMC and unlike many international schools is a non-profit-making, fully incorporated charity. Around 70% of its students are Czech and 30% are international students from over twenty different countries.

The College prepares students for a mixture of IGCSE exams, Common European Framework language exams (DELF, Instituto Cervantes and Goethe Institut), as well as ensures that all students in Years 1-4 follow an authorised Czech Curriculum. All students study for the International Baccalaureate in Years 5 and 6 and just over half of the cohort also takes the Czech Maturita examination in addition to the IB. The College has more than twenty-five years’ experience of teaching the IB and many of our staff are IB examiners.

The teaching staff consists of a dynamic mix of recent and more experienced graduates, the vast majority of whom are native English speakers or have been trained in the UK system.  A particular benefit, which is relatively unusual for schools abroad, is that, following a successful probationary period, we offer permanent contracts to our staff. We value relationships between student and teacher and of course how both of these connect with parents. We also actively promote a culture of academic aspiration and individualised expectations.

The College traces its traditions back to the Prague English Grammar School which existed in Prague from the 1920s but suffered closure under both the Nazis and the Communists. It seeks to maintain the traditions and rigour of an English Grammar School within the Czech educational framework and its governors are drawn from both the UK and the Czech Republic, symbolised by its two founding patrons – former President Vaclav Havel and Charles, Prince of Wales.
