Job overview

Langley Park School for Boys is noted for its friendly atmosphere, with good relationships amongst both staff and pupils and the History Department is no exception to this.    The History Department has eight specialist historians who all have their own classroom and access to a wide range of technical and literary resources including interactive whiteboards and extensive DVD/ video facilities.  We aim to equip our pupils with a strong historical knowledge and a confidence in the use of the central skills of source evaluation, causal explanation, an appreciation of change and continuity, a sense of the diversity of interpretations, an ability to write in a variety of styles and to argue different points of view.  Fieldwork and visits are organised to reinforce the subject outside the classroom - Rochester Castle, the Imperial War Museum, National Army Museum, Houses of Parliament, the First World War Battlefields of the Somme and Ypres, Paris, the D-Day beaches and Berlin are just some of the sites we have visited recently.

About Langley Park School for Boys

Founded in 1901 as The Beckenham Technical Institute, before transitioning into Beckenham and

Penge Grammar School and then being renamed again when it moved to its current site in Eden Park

Road, Langley Park School for Boys has a rich history of educating local boys, and more recently in

the Sixth Form Girls as well.

Situated in Beckenham in the north of Bromley, London’s largest borough, the school is a very

popular and highly oversubscribed secondary comprehensive which retains many of the traditions of

its Grammar School past. The school now has over 1700 students on role including 600+ in its coeducational

Sixth Form and maintains its long-held belief in the importance of educating the ‘whole

child’. Whilst academic outcomes continue to be well above national averages at all levels, and with

GCSE progress scores also above average for boys every year, the school also retains its focus on

wider aspects of education placing a great deal of importance on the Visual and Performing Arts,

Sport and Outdoor Education. The school’s main sports are Rugby, Hockey, Cricket and Athletics in

which it competes with weekly fixtures against other local schools throughout the year. The

Performing Arts team regularly put on fantastic musical and theatrical performances in the purpose

built 550-seater theatre built in to the school which also boasts three Dance studios, and recording

studios.

The school is heavily over-subscribed with around 900 applications each year for the 220 places

available in year 7, and around 800 applications for the 150 external places in the Sixth Form. The

school was re-built under the BSF scheme with the new buildings opening in 2012 and providing

exceptionally high-quality facilities across all subjects. The school has an active and highly successful

PTA and a very supportive parent body who support the work that the school does.

We are extremely proud of the tradition and the success of Langley Park School for Boys and you can
