Job overview

BELIEVE IN TRADITIONAL VALUES, ACADEMIC RIGOUR AND VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS? Want a SLT who visibly support staff? Want to teach pupils who behave impeccably at all times?

Visit! You will be blown away.

If the above is what you are looking for, you will be interested in our oversubscribed 11-16 school in the centre of Bedford.  We are recruiting a History Teacher.

RESPECT, HONESTY, HIGH EXPECTATIONS

At BFS our values of respect, honesty and high expectations drive everything that we do. As a result our teachers enjoy impeccable behaviour in lessons and hardworking, highly motivated pupils. Open for 7 years, Bedford Free School is a genuinely comprehensive school that provides a knowledge-based education for pupils of all backgrounds. We teach an unashamedly academic curriculum consisting of the best that has been thought and said, and as you would expect, history is at the heart of this.

PARENTAL CHOICE

With waiting lists in each year group and GCSE results that are very strong, we have quickly become a very popular school. Demand for places is high as parents want the combination of a BFS education and our distinctive small school feel for their children.

We’re looking for people who want to be the best. You will be excellent in the classroom and willing to lead by example, but will also contribute positively to wider school life. Most of all, you will be clear that education is a great leveler and work hard to help us achieve our goal of preparing every pupil to go to university.

THE DEPARTMENT

History at BFS is taught by subject specialists and staff exercise their considerable freedom in the curriculum. At BFS we teach a knowledge-based curriculum designed to give our pupils the cultural capital that is the norm for the most advantaged in society, but is often lacking elsewhere. We are preparing them for GCSE, A Level and university study, but we also believe in knowledge and learning for their own sake so that pupils can enter into the conversation of educated citizens.

SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT

Career development is a priority - there will be opportunities to work on whole school priorities and gain the experience required to progress into senior leadership in due course. Additionally, we offer financial assistance for relevant post graduate study and support for middle leaders wishing to apply to become Specialist Leaders of Education. We have partnerships with a number of local training providers, the Institute for Teaching, and with Inspiration Trust in Norfolk, so professional learning is second-to-none.

You will be joining us at an exciting time – our multi-academy trust will expand soon, and is sure to create exciting opportunities for our staff in the future.

There are no unwieldy and impossible marking policies, no written reports, our pupils’ behaviour is impeccable supported by same-day whole-school sanctions where necessary - delivered centrally so teachers are not chasing, and Senior Leaders have a very high profile to ensure that you are supported to develop. We cut out unnecessary workload!

If our traditional approach and values match yours, then we welcome visits to the school at any time and encourage you to apply. For a confidential discussion about the position with the Principal, please contact Esther Logan, PA to the Principal, on 01234 332290 or email elogan@bedfordfreeschool.co.uk to arrange an appointment.

Early applications are encouraged and we reserve the right to close the process and interview early for this post should a suitable candidate apply.

We strongly advise a visit as this school is unlikely to be like anything you have ever seen!

Small school, big curriculum, infinite possibilities.

We are a small school, where teachers and pupils know each other and look out for each other. Safeguarding children enrolled at the School is of paramount importance, and we are fully committed to the protection and safe care of our pupils. The successful applicant will be required to undertake appropriate checks as well as providing proof of your right to work in the UK.

We have our own salary scale and we have created a significant remuneration package for the right person.

To apply, please either download and complete the application form that can be found on the TES website or visit the BFS website (www.bedfordfreeschool.co.uk).  Please then send completed applications to recruitment@bedfordfreeschool.co.uk

Closing date: Monday 2nd March 2020 at 9.00am

Interview date:        W/C 2nd March 2020

BFS opened in September 2012 and is now heavily oversubscribed, reflecting our established popularity and reputation with local parents. We have now celebrated three sets of solid GCSE results that put us top in Bedford and amongst the best in the region. In the coming years we aim to become one of the top performing schools in the country and as we continue to develop, we are looking to recruit excellent teachers who share our values and beliefs. We now wish to appoint more outstanding professionals to join our team.

Our staff will:-

  • share our values of respect, honesty and high expectations
  • believe that every student, regardless of background  is capable of the highest level of behaviour and academic success
  • be expert in their subject

In return we offer well-motivated, polite and hard working pupils and the opportunity to join an exciting school as it begins its next phase of development. We believe in 'growing our own' staff and as such, there are always opportunities for further training and career progression. We have a reasonable approach to workload with our 'no marking' feedback policy, no requirement for formal lesson plans, and a large amount of professional autonomy.
