Job overview

We wish to appoint an enthusiastic and highly committed graduate to teach History at Key Stage 3 and 4, with the possibility of also teaching at key stage 5.

History is a well-established and extremely popular subject throughout the college. The department has a strong track record for results at all key stages and is committed to delivering an outstanding experience for all students, developing the essential learning habits required for students to achieve their potential in the subject.

Accommodation is currently in a base of four adjoining classrooms and a departmental office. There are data projectors in all classrooms.

Curriculum

At Key Stage 3, History is taught once per week in year 7, and twice per week in year 8.
The Key Stage 3 curriculum is as follows:

Year 7:

  • Britain before 1066
  • Who had the power in Medieval times?
  • How do we best define the Tudor and Stuart periods?

Year 8:

  • Was the British Empire great or grot?
  • Was the 20th Century a time of progress or conflict?


At Key Stage 3 students are currently taught in mixed ability sets across two populations.
At Key Stage 4 History is one of the most popular option subjects. Year cohorts regularly exceed 100 students. We operate a 3 year Key Stage 4.

The GCSE course is currently:

Year 9:
Year 10:

  • EdExcel GCSE (9-1) – The USA 1954-1975: conflict at home and
    Abroad, followed by Crime and Punishment Through Time, c.1000- present
  • OCR GCSE (9-1) Explaining the Modern World: The USA 1919-46

Year 11:

  • OCR GCSE (9-1) Explaining the Modern World: International Relations 1918-2001, Historic Environment – Castles 1000-1750


The department also offers Ancient History at GCSE

A level History is also one of the most popular subjects in the college.

The Department currently has two groups at AS level and two A2 groups.

The successful candidate would therefore have to be prepared to contribute to the department’s A level teaching.

The department teaches the following EdExcel syllabus:

Year 12:

  • The rise and fall of Fascism in Italy c.1911-46
  • Germany and West Germany 1919-1989

Year 13:

  • Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors 1485-1603
  • The causes of the English Civil War (coursework).


For the last 3 years our A Level results have been rated outstanding by ALPS.

Current Department issues include:

  • Implementation of new Edexcel GCSE specification
  • Key stage 3 assessment and new-style levels.
  • Working to achieve target grades at GCSE and maintaining results at A level..
